How much do movers cost?

Will be moving into new house within next couple of months. Got a quote from first guy I asked for $1,700.
That sounds way too high. I will be moving 2 bedroom suits, patio furniture, couple couches, couple recliners, flat screen, small tv stand, kitchen appliances, dining room table and chairs.
This is my first time using a moving company. Anybody have experience with this on here?

There are different kinds of movers with different costs.
You need more info though, how far and what exactly are they providing and doing? How many guys? You will be paying for windshield time on the way too and from the move for everyone in their truck.

All they are doing is moving all that i listed from a storage unit to the house. 20 minute drive. No unpacking of anything.
I’m not sure how many guys will be doing it.

For that rent a truck and pay some college kids to do the heavy lifting. I always rent a truck with a lift gate when I can, makes things so easy when you get to the heavy stuff.

Local moves, usually $150/hr for two movers and a 20-26’ box truck.
I would say that’s probably a 2.5 hr job, three hours tops. $500 at the very most.

Uhaul’s website has referrals to smaller independent moving companies who will show up and help you load. You just want to read the reviews to make sure they are a solid company with good workers.
I rented the truck and the company I used sent over 2 college kids to help me load everything up and unload. They came ready to work and had their own straps and tools, I was impressed.

Rounding up a few local schmucks you can pay in cash for is one thing. But to hire a moving company, that has to pay for liability insurance, workman comp, etc. it will just add a lot to the cost.
Only way it would be worth it to go through a high priced company is that may be they will settle something eith you if the break something valuable.

I have used a local (local to south Louisiana) company twice for moves. I pay them by the hour. With that being the case I had to make sure I had everything ready for them upon their arrival so when they walked in the door they are loading up the truck.
My last move was moving my stuff from storage to my house (4 bedroom house). It was about a 15 min drive. I paid right at $1,300 (that was before tip)

I had this exact experience and similar price. If you have everything broken down (even beds) ready to just put on the truck you save a good bit of money. If they have to take the time to take things apart then it’ll cost more.

Sounds cheap to me. Money well spent in my opinion. I know some people have rented uhauls and went to temp employment agencies for the labor. Just seems risky to me.

Yeah, just getting people that don't usually do moving jobs is bad news. Doing it efficiently and safely comes with a little bit of experience.
That said, I've had very good experiences with "2 guys and truck" type movers who've come referred and with good reviews.
With the tip, I've paid around $250 per hour ($100-ish more for an extra guy once).
Only thing is that they're not companies with insurance but I also wasn't moving priceless art.
If I had an unlimited budget and didn't want to lift my finger for a single thing, I'd go with a company that comes in and boxes etc. . .
If not, I'd try to find some local guys but certainly ones that actually do it all the time for a living or side gig.

This. Rent a uhaul and get local laborers to help if you want to do it cheaply.
$1700 maybe high, but there’s a lot of profit built in and they are expecting the worst case scenario as far as coming into a house that’s not ready at all to be moved.

Getting quotes for $200/hour here in Dallas.
Rent a truck yourself and move a ton of small shite yourself to make sure they get it done in 2-4 hours.
We’re looking at paying $500-$1000.
Paid $4k flat from Nashville to Dallas, 3 BR house and full garage.
Seemed pretty reasonable to us.

We shopped around and hired "cheap" movers for our last move.
BIG mistake.
One dude spent half the day blowing up the toilet at our old house, and the rest of the day blowing up the toilet at our new house.
They also damaged several things.
Having said all of that, I will absolutely be hiring movers for any future moves...I'll just pony up for more reputable ones

Moved a 4 bedroom home about 5 miles last Summer.
Local mover $1500
Boxes and supplies $300
Trailer for boxes and stuff we could move $125
Total $1925
We moved into a rent home while our home in Broussard was being built. I have to move from DFW to Broussard in late June. I am considering moving with PODS through PODS or Uhaul. Anyone been through that?

My mom just paid 1200$ for movers. It was from her house to a storage facility 5 miles away. One load on a big truck, 3 guys, 2700sq ft house. 2 bedrooms of furniture, washer/dryer, living room furniture, kitchen table, chairs and buffet, lots of other crap. I thought that was a pretty good price

Is it a quoted hourly rate? The last couple of times we've moved, the company's quote was higher than what we actually paid because it didn't take them as long as they quoted. Last time I want to say it was $500 less than our quote. I figure it is better for them to overestimate up front rather than charging more on the back end. Perceptions and all. :)
