The Bagman...NIL is out of control

But is it possible what we are seeing now has been going on for years now, but behind the scenes? I’m positive some of the big donors today were the ones filling the bags in the years past.

sure, players were getting paid, but not as much since it was all under the table.
But the real problem is the combination of NIL and the immediate-play transfer. This terrible combo means players can literally go to the highest bidder, and play immediately next year.
The combo of the two is destroying the game.

Disagree with your first comment. I had a buddy who was a walk on for the football team who explicitly told me that an unnamed starter circa 2016(who was not good) was gifted a house at U Club during his time there as well as a debit card that never dropped below 5 figures.

quote:but some players are now getting (literally) millions in cash. That level of payment didn't happen prior to NIL.

Collectives are not new and the bagmen have always been the guys with 5-10k in cash to provide to recruits. The big money guys help but are normally used by the program for bigger needs

It was going on, but only for a select few, I suspect. Now that they don't have to hide, these boosters are just going out and buying all the best players on what is now effectively the free agent market. And players don't have to worry about being caught, either, so we're seeing way more than ever. There is no other way that Jimbo Fisher would out-recruit Nick Saban.

People truly can’t be naive to the fact that players have been getting paid in various ways. Go to Lauberge after a football game and you’ll see players picking up chips from different persons. If a player needed a new TV or something from Best Buy, it would be paid for and all they had to do was pick it up.

Why shouldn’t the top talent in this multi billion dollar industry have this right ?

There are a few reasons. But first, I’ll say that I am ALL in favor of players getting paid. And I am sure they have been getting paid for a really long time.
But, the way this is set up, every team is essentially made up of free agents. That can and are leaving after one year at a school. How are coaches supposed to manage their rosters?
So at the end of the day, the programs with the most egotistical boosters that will give a group of kids the most money & the nicest cars will be the programs that have all of the top tier talent. This means that there will only be a small handful of programs that will compete for championships. It’s not about X’s & O’s, but Jimmys & Joes. And LSU ain’t in that group.

Players have always got paid, but nowhere to this scale.
Look for a lot of "construction and renovation" contracts to come from LSU, which will filter the TV money out to various groups, who will then buy rosters. You know it's going to happen.

I liked it better with skeevy under the table deals. Tennessee happy meal bags of cash come to mind. A more fun era.

For the most part, they were getting paid chump change relative to what they are paid now

You remember the big Cam Newton thing? What was it 300k to his father's church or something like that? Those numbers don't even compare to now.

No shite.
Nothing has actually changed other than it's public now. Which is why I find it hilarious that people think this has ruined college sports.

You are correct!
I think the player should be locked into the initial school for a min 1 season / semester & then also a minimum of 1 season / semester each time they transfer via the PORTAL.
They should have instituted some type of checks & mandates or limits or something to NIL & the PORTAL. Allowing both basically unabated is akin to saying Fuk-It!!!!
