REVEALED: Boy, 14, who fell to his death from 430-foot tall ride at Florida ICON park was sitting in seat where sensors had been MODIFIED so that the ride could operate
quote:
His seat had been adjusted to enable a gap 6-7 inches wide and still register as being fastened securely, despite all other seats having a gap of only 3.33 inches

Was this the morbidly obese kid that shouldn’t have been on the ride in the first place?

The report does not address whether the 6-foot-5 teenager should have been allowed on the ride
The operating manual states that rides should weigh less than 286lbs:
Sampson's father Yarnell said his football-playing son weighed 340lbs

Yup.... he slid right out from under the harness. Sad.

Regardless of how fat the kid was, the operators rigged up a seat to register as locked when it wasn’t then allowed people to sit there.
That’s negligence on behalf of the operator.

The ol "modify the safety features" trick.
Works fine until someone is killed.
Then it's all over for everyone.
There will be a lot of finger pointing, but the facts are that it was adjusted to allow fat kids ride.

It still doesn’t make a lot of sense. The seats are angle back. It would be very hard to shootout the front. I just keep thinking back to what he was doing with his feet on the way down. Why were his feet moving all erratically? I wonder if he was messing around.
Still no excuse for the ride not functioning properly

I saw that video on him falling out and I couldn’t get the sound of him hitting the ground out of my head for a couple of days.

These shady theme parks will all eventually be closed one by one… it’s just sad that it will take another child death to make each one go away…

I feel for the operator. Probably some college kid making $12/hour. You just know if the operator told the kid he was too big for the ride that someone would have broken out a cell phone camera and cried racism or fatphobia and it would have ultimately ended in the operator being fired.

Im wondering who they are suggesting did the seat modification. Surely it wasn't the ride operators. Seems like this would have had to be done by a technician when the ride was installed specifically for overweight riders.
Sounds like some very shitty decision making and they will pay dearly.
eta: based on the photos in the article, someone had to adjust the sensor with an allen wrench. I highly doubt the hourly operator would give a damn enough to do this, or even know how.

They are angled back going up. When they reach the top, they tilt FORWARD and are still tilting forward when they drop down. At the bottom they then tilt back to let the rider off.

Glad I didn’t see it. I have enough bad sounds in my head already.

Yes, but I’m not going to hold the 14 year old responsible. His parents probably contributed greatly to his being overweight. That said, whoever modified that seat, and whoever knowingly skirted the rules to allow him on, is at fault.

He was 6’5 and 320 lbs. I guess every lineman in college or pro football is morbidly obese?

The kid bears zero responsibility. He thought the ride was safe as it was presented to him. That’s why you have trained operators running the rides - to tell the kid no he can’t ride.
