You aren't putting your best wing and allNBA defender on the bench. You need him out there to guard the best player on the opposing team. The opposing teams best player plays with the starters.

Yeah, first team all NBA defenders come off the bench all the time…
Whether the league recognizes it or not, that’s what he is: an elite defender. You don’t put that guy at the 6th spot…

I'll get blasted for this. But I think that Jones is a potential 6th man monster

When we talk about this roster he seems clearly stuck on the SG position and thinks nobody on the roster fits it, so he'd rather fill that position and send one of the "SFs" to the bench.

I doubt Jones makes 1st or 2nd team this year and specialists come off the bench all the time. Tony Allen, Patrick Beverly, Thybulle, Roberson, Marcus Smart, Avery Bradley.. all occasional starters that have made the All NBA team fairly recently. Given our injury record, he'd still probably start over half the games filling in.
I'm just looking to improve the team. Who else are you sitting? Or do you believe that the team is maxed out and ready to contend as is?

This team needs a player like KCP as a sixth man coming off the bench, not a undersized 2 guard like Mitchell. CJ just got out of being in a small back court with a ball dominate guard and has thrived so why would we put him back in the same position. If you had noticed the Jazz have had a crazy number of 4th quarter collapse and Mitchell has played a major part in it.

yes but as was pointed out when I suggested it, he’s a klutch client. We don’t participate in klutch anymore

KCP might be a good fit for next year, but long term we really just need to dump Graham's salary and replace him with a rookie contract. I'm starting to think the play with Graham is let him rehab his value half a season next to Zion and try to flip him for an expiring and a protected 1st at the deadline.

How does any of this apply to the OP? How would we get KCP from Washington (14M)? I'm pretty sure we wouldn't trade one of the 1st 2 picks in the draft for him.
If yall are saying to use the 2 picks (Ivey and Holmgren or Smith), then trade for KCP. What are we trading, Graham and what else? Ivey backing up McCollum? Is Smith or Holmgren taking Hayes minutes?
Would those 3 players have more of an impact than getting Mitchell?

It doesn't.
If we actually landed 2 top 4 picks, the play to make in my mind would be use one to draft and the other to trade, probably with OKC. By virtue of us jumping up into both spots OKC would likely fall back to 6, so you could probably trade a top 3 pick for SGA and future picks.
That's when you'd have some hard choices to make about the starting lineup, because it'd be hard to bench either CJ or SGA for Herb. You probably would just play a tighter rotation and the top 6 guys get more minutes.

I’m not sure if I’m the only one, but I would take Jonas a million times before Gobert
If not, then you should be. Gobert is still an elite defender and would do a lot more for us than Jonas.

I can’t see any world where Graham could actually fetch any pick at this point. Feel like we’d have to pay to dump him.
I see scrubs like mclemore who are way more effective than graham for 1/5 the price. Graham started this season good but went to total shite for some reason

That probably is aiming a little too high, but you can get an expiring and a 2nd if he plays well in the JJ role off the bench with Zion. He has the skill set to play that role if he hasn't forgotten how to shoot.
I'm not looking for actual assets for Graham, I just want him gone by next deadline so he's not taking minutes from young guys and I also don't want to pay to dump him.

I dont know if his confidence is shot or what but he’s a totally different player from where he started this year

The starting lineup is set. If you want to replace anyone you have to upgrade them. To upgrade even "lesser" players like Herb, you still pretty much need a Star level player that does the same things.
You don't replace Herb with Mitchell, you replace him with Kawhi. JV would be replaced with KAT. But then you get into cap and tax issues. It's just really hard to find upgrades for this team via trade or FA.
Great analysis...once you reach a point, you gotta go "apples for apples & oranges for oranges" when trying to improve the overall team. In Herb's case, an apple for a better apple...might be replacing him with Mikal Bridges but I doubt Suns are gonna let that monster get away any time soon.
And since I'm a Herbaholic, I must mention that MB is in his 4th year & was picked #10 overall & I'm not sure where Herb will be 4 years from now, but he'll be MUCH better than he is today. Bottom line, Herb is gonna be a VERY good "apple".

He did the same thing with the PG position—-was adamant that CJ wouldn’t play the 1 since he’s never played the one so therefore DG must remain a starter

He just agreed with everything I said earlier (look up). If we get two picks in the top 4, we would trade one or both for a bigger name player most likely a guard. I said Mitchell, he said SGA, it's the same result. Someone is going to the bench until there is an injury (which would probably be pretty quick). It's an obvious move..

The problem with that move is it makes CJ an expensive luxury. That's hard to swallow right now because he seems like a perfect fit now, and probably for another 3 years or so. Long term having a CJ replacement in house already is a good thing, it just would be tricky to navigate over the next few years.

You really aren't getting this. Positions like "SG" and "SF" don't matter and aren't important, in the slightest.
This isn't 2K, this is real life. Roles matter and Herb's role is to guard the opposing teams best perimeter player. Herb is gonna spend his time on the court, when the opposing teams best player is on the court. So you're 6th man idea makes zero sense.
