His shooting numbers aren’t far off from Wright. If this guy is going to be a focal point, we are screwed. If he’s just another piece, he will be just fine.

. If you are bringing in a guy like Carter to be Adam Miller/Jordan Wright 2.0...guys who can put up big, but inefficient numbers, then that is a problem. But if you are bringing in a good defender who can help supplement the offense a bit that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Agreed, Alt. I think Carter is quite a good pull from the portal.... so long as he's not the golden goose. He is a quality player and will contribute on D and give us some nice scoring opportunities... but if we make him into the next Jordan Wright we might be screwed. Jordan is a solid player but should not have been given the keys- the same can be said for Carter. I'm tired of subpar three point shooters being given 8+ attempts per game in the McMahon era.
I think Carter would be best suited as a 2.. still need a sharpshooting playmaker and a big.

Totally agree regarding adding a shooter and a big. This team desperately needs both.
I need to look into Carter a bit. Like you said, he appears to be a supplemental piece and not a main contributor.

I am surprised we haven't heard from Cook yet. I wonder if he is trying to come back. You would figure he would have been in the portal already if we was leaving.

I thought we had our shooter (Ward) and our big (Reed) already. Both former top 100 players. At what point can we expect our own guys to get developed within our program?

Ward has proven he can be a good shooter, but to be blunt- his defense is terrible. Plus, in this era of college basketball, you can never have enough shooters. Carter may not be as good of a shooter as Ward, but he's a MUCH better defender. Carter's defense and finishing should make up for the deficiencies in Ward's game.
In regards to Reed, most of the avid fans on here are coming around to the idea of him playing as the 5. I think he has undoubtedly gotten better from his freshman year (although not by a lot) but I think his role on the team with Baker being in the way was negatively impacted.

Come back from where ? He is still on the team, but was suspended from playing the last few weeks.

The #12 transfer portal for On3 has JP Pegues from Furman. He is from New Orleans. Pegues as a junior led Furman with 18.4 points per game and 4.8 assists per game.

Both Ward & Reed need to up their games big-time. They had some spurts of good b-ball but are very inconsistent and they'd be nothing more than role players for good teams, unless they make a huge jump in their 3rd season.

I feel like On3 has the information wrong. Everywhere else says he is from Nashville. Including the Furman basketball website.
That said, McMahon has recruiting ties in Tennessee and LSU HAS reached out to him already.

Yeah I don't think he is from New Orleans. He went to Hillsboro HS in Nashville and his birthplace is listed as Nashville on ESPN and Furman's website. Only thing I can think is that he was born in Nashville, moved to New Orleans, and then went back to Nashville for HS but I can't find that anywhere

Pegues would be a nice pickup. The current On3 rankings will change a lot however as more enter the portal. Likely will still be in the top 35 or so when the dust settles.
Another mid-major candidate that could backup the 2/3 (replace Mwani) would be Cade Tyson, 6'7" G/F from Belmont, will have 2 years left. Career 45% 3Pt shooter on 287 attempts plus a career 86% FT shooter. Avg 16 pts, 6 reb, 1.6 ast, 1 steal. MVC freshman of year, MVC 2nd team this year.

I don't think LSU needs to look at it from a "we need to replace one player with another player who has a similar skillset." LSU just needs to get the best players they can and then figure out what style of play works best.
For two seasons McMahon has had a "stretch 5" (Williams and Baker) as integral parts of his offense. KJ was great, but really didn't have a PG to supplement him. Baker was who we thought he would be. A below the rim big who could step out and hit the 3 (to some degree), but would struggle defensively and rebounding. In both cases LSU's offense and defense were terribly inefficient. I'm not saying it was completely their fault. Far from it. It's just that maybe LSU doesn't HAVE to have a "stretch 5" on their team. Maybe a more traditional big man, similar to Phillips or Dean would better suit the team. Guys who can contest at the rim and rebound. Maybe LSU pivots to what Wade did with Trendon Watford and allow Reed to take that role. Trendon somewhat played the "5"...but he wasn't simply a post and pop player. He could handle the ball outside, shoot a bit, and spread the floor. That might be where Reed is best suited. Then you have guys similar to Days and Emmitt Williams would could rebound/defend more inside. Chest reminds me a lot of Williams.
You don't HAVE to be married to one style of play. Particularly when you can't get the ideal guys to play it. Go back to Wade's first 4 seasons. In years 1-2 the offense relied a ton on Waters (a more traditional PG) creating off high ball screens with true "bigs". In year's three and four Smart was the PG and he was very different in style than Waters. You also didn't have the more traditional "bigs" like Reath or Bigby-Williams. Yet, the offense got better. Two different styles. Great results with all. In year 5 LSU didn't have that mix or a consistent PG. Yet they had length and athleticism. So they morphed into a tremendous defensive team.
I feel like McMahon has specific roles he want and he recruits to fill those specific roles...even if it means taking a lesser player. I'm more in the camp of get the absolute best players you can then mold your style of play to fit what they do best.

This is why small school coaches struggle to have success in big programs in both basketball and football. Small schools recruit players for their system, big schools fit their system to their players.

Cam Carter
Sometimes you just need a player who is willing to let them fly. At a lot of times this year Wright, Ward, and Williams seemed to pass on wide open 3's instead of shooting them. Especially against State when Ward went down, no one would take a shot, and quite frankly they looked scared too.
Just for comparison Cam Thomas (who never hesitated)
-32.5% 3Pt shooter
-40.6% FG
-1.4/1.7 AST to TO
He's a take
quote:
-Took 12.6 shots to get to 14.6 ppg last season
- Shot under 31% from 3 (and fired up almost 6 per game)
- Averaged more turnovers (3.0) than assists (2.6)
- Shot only 39% from the floor with an eFG% of 45.9%
- Had a 13.3 PER which basically below average

God knows we need it. Wright was probably our most aggress Defender, Williams is also above average, but we generally lacked 5 players who could play team defense.

What we are in desperate need for are a couple of PG’s. Ours were not acceptable. We improve ball control , rebounds and shooting % and we can have 12 more wins next season.
