Hunter Dean wasnt on scholarship this past season, so we just had 12 on scholarship this year.

Mod on premium board mentioned this a week or so ago about Dean.
Thanks for the info, I had no idea. Would make sense since we were supposed to lose one this past year and this upcoming season.

Thought this would have been completed by now, why on earth did we have 13 on scholarship in McMahon's first season? Royally stupid move if so. Just another excuse for next season though I suppose.
We probably should have but we were still in the back and forth of replies to the NOA that summer. That would have been a conversation involving Woody.

Anybody know the latest on Anthony Gilkes? I couldn't find anything on his X.

On3 has us as the leader to get him, LINK

Not a lot of top schools in his top 5 schools, but seems to be a talented kid who could develop into an SEC caliber player.

Also anybody know the status of Young and Benhayoune? Why not give their spots too some local guards who have a chance to develop into hidden gems over 5 years.

IIRC he was originally ranked much higher like top 25 in his class or so as a freshman. Wade offered him back then. I still think he is very good and would like to get him. 6'6'' at the guard spot is nice, especially since our guards are all like 6'2''-6'3'' and below.

Vyctorius Miller just released from NLI to Oregon. Any chance of landing him?

We seemed well in the mix with Miller. Don't see why not.

Daimion Collins posted about Carter’s commitment on his IG story. Collins is definitely returning next year.

I am semi-concerned about the numbers here though. We theoretically have 2 spots available on the court for "bigs". I feel like Chest is going to be a main stay at one of those spots (25-32 mpg) because of his rebounding ability. Leaving us Fountain, Reed, Miller, Collins, and whatever transfer we get to come in to play the other 60 or so available minutes. Reed has shown flashes of great scoring ability, but has inconsistent effort, costing us turnovers and rebounds. Fountain hustles but in my opinion has a pretty defined ceiling. Collins is a big unknown, but his career stats are not impressive, and when I saw him play earlier in the year he seemed timid. Chest really impressed me in our open scrimmage against LC, and why we red-shirted him is still a mystery to me.
Inversely we probably have 100 minutes per game available for guards, with a 2/3 guard splitting minutes with Ward for the "3" spot where we currently have Stewart, Williams, Carter, and Givens giving us only one spot available for another guard out of the portal, and no spot for an additional high school SG. Assuming we are still dealing with 12 scholarships.

Why on Earth would you think Chest would come in as a redshirt freshman and get 30+ minutes? Because you thought he looked good in a scrimmage? Reed and Fountain start over him.

And his redshirt was in part his decision. Unless you are accusing McMahon of lying.

If Cook stays, he is our starting pg with Givens backing him up. Williams starts at the 2 with Ward at the 3. Cam backs up at the 2 and 3. If Cook leaves, we grab a starting point from the portal.

Chest starting is solely an opinion and may very well be wrong, but his athleticism separates him. We can all agree the play of our forwards last year left much to be desired especially in rebounding. I am not accusing CMM of anything, just think he could have helped out the team, but I am sure there are things about that situation that I don't know.

After the way the things ended last season with Cook, I would be shocked if he stays. Even if he does I still think we need another guard from the Portal. This teams record is going to be defined by how the guards play, and want to make sure we have the best line up possible.

We still need a center to be a presence under the basket and 6 bigs just seems like a lot for this team, that's the point I was trying to make.

I think Reed showed improvement in rebounding as the year went on, and I look for him and Fountain to step up some more next season. Chest will play some. Collins and a transfer portal guy will play most of the minutes at center, with Miller backing them up. Depending on how much muscle they put on, you might see Fountain or Reed play some at the 5, which would open up a few more minutes for Chest.

Maybe Chest comes out and wins the spot, but he wouldn't have redshirted if he was that good.

I agree. I think Givens plays important minutes, and they spend a lot of time trying to get him ready, but it will either be Cook or a portal veteran playing the most minutes.

Yes, someone will likely get a reduced role if everyone is healthy, but injuries do happen. Just this past year Collins and Stewart missed most of the season and Cook missed significant time.

But where does that put Stewart? He’s most likely returning. Because of this, he’s going to eat into someone’s minutes- whether it’s Givens, Williams, Carter, or whoever.

Or, if as you suggest, he’s not going to play, then he’s just wasting a roster spot (especially even if he does play but still plays off ball). So what is the point of retaining him?

Stewart plays good defense, has experience, and doesn’t turn it over much. I’ll think he carve out some minutes for himself, through effort. But he and Givens can’t be our only point guards going into next season.

The last few seasons I think we have ran into trouble with not having enough ball handlers, so don’t want to chase one away who wants to be here.

Disagree.. but I will say he does try and he gives effort. But our scheme paired with his lack of size made his defense ineffective last year.

I agree with this, but tbf he was playing off the ball and barely got any touches last year. It's hard to turn the ball over when you never get to see it.

I wouldn't consider him a "PG" necessarily.. he's more of a ball dominant combo guard. Not really a playmaker, but a guy that can drop the ball and score from multiple levels. At LSU, he was an off ball two guard.

Yes this is true and I agree with your brother. So that begs the question: why does McMahon take the ball out of his hands and force him into being an off ball player????? It makes ZERO fricking sense.

I don't know. I know that you saw him from his previous school, but I didn't see much at LSU and have to hope that was due to injury. I was disappointed I didn't see him try to handle the point more. I know he may not have been placed in that position by name, but if he has the skills to handle it I would have expected to see him gravitate to it more than he did.

Hopefully he gets healthy and we see what he can do.
