If you really want to know the point of blowing up the basketball program, you'll have to go to the source, but I don't think Will Wade is talking much right now.

quote:you mean a guy who's been a head coach for 7 years, and won or tied for his conference championship 5 of those 7 years?
However, he had to settle for a Will Wade wannabe
A guy with a .697 overall winning percentage (.750 in conference).
A guy who's made it to the Dance 3 times - and won first round games twice.
That guy's a Will Wade wannabe????

There is obviously much pro and anti Wade/Woodward/NCAA sentiment on this board. Regardless of your position on this; there is one probability that will not go away: we will be fielding a men's BB team full of 2 star or lower rated players that will absolutely struggle to win any SEC games over the next several years. I heard CMM's comments about building a program and all the sound bites/cliches about working hard; but he has never recruited a top 100 player in his career and now has to try and do that under the shroud of sanctions while competing against SEC programs which will offer much more. I don't see many LSU BB fans hanging out in PMAC to see a last place team which will be the laughing stock of the SEC. Yes I know Auburn and Baylor rebounded quickly but there is a huge difference between Bruce Pearl/Scott Drew's ability to draw recruits and our new coach. Hoping I am dead wrong, but we will see. By the way, not an encouraging start by losing Murray to the portal today.

To prevent more severe sanctions?
If Woody had continued to stand by Wade, I could see the punishment being worse.
I’m always surprised at the opinions here, when everyone knows they don’t have all the information

A show cause includes two things:
1) A specific and detailed account of what the receiver is allowed to do and prohibited from doing while under the employment of an NCAA institution. Usually, this is involves a prohibition on the receiver being involved in any recruiting activities for the time specified. However, it can involve more: see the link to the punishment for Donnie Tyndall, who is totally prohibited from coaching at an NCAA institution for 10 years (expiring in 2026), and being suspended for half-a-season at any NCAA coaching job he might take after 2026.
2) The school must report to the NCAA every six months showing the "proof of good reason" as to why they should be considered in good compliance for the entire duration of the show-cause sanction. In other words, the school has to show that the coach in question is abiding by the terms of their penalties.
Wikipedia article on Show Cause Penalty, including specific historic cases.
Now, I don't think Wade's sanction will be as bad as Tyndall's, as there is no mention of academic fraud in the NCAA case against Wade. But, I do fully expect Wade to be prohibited from any recruiting activity, and I expect the show-cause to be at least 5 years long.
That's 5 years of not talking to recruits.
That's 5 years of not going to games to watch recruits.
That's 5 years of not being able to host recruits on visits.
That's 5 years of not being involved in any basketball camp LSU might put on for high school players.
No school would keep a coach who couldn't do those things. Nor should they. And, this applies to any school Wade tries to work with.
LSU can still try to argue that since the FBI was involved, Wade lawyered up and that prevented LSU from knowing the extent of his activity. That's their best defense against the accusations of lack of institutional control: When they heard about the tape, they forced Wade to take a new contract that opened the door for LSU to fire him quickly. I do not know whether that will work.
Either way, LSU had no choice but to fire Wade in a timely manner. It will be a long time before Will Wade coaches another college basketball game for any school.

You are so right. Our new coach just doesn’t have it. The guy is simply not performing. Just look at the results. It’s obvious we made a mistake. Am I right?

At this point sanctions are irrelevant. The damage is done. LSU is looking at potentially not having any or very few scholarship players next year, which will have a more devastating effect than missing a post season tournament or 2. Not sure what the right answer was. Sucks all around.

The NCAA is going to take away all of LSU’s basketball scholarships? That seems pretty harsh. I’m going to go out in a limb and say that doesn’t happen.

Yeah because denying everything and forcing the NCAA's hand even with overwhelming evidence always works out well in the end...

No NCAA won’t take them all away, there just won’t be any on the team. How many are left right now? Recruits? And no sanctions yet.

It’s hilarious to me that they did this to Wade but not Orgeron
