Paying your kids for good grades

Yesterday, we went to lunch with some friends that have a daughter the same age as our youngest. We were discussing spring break (this week in Mississippi) and I made the comment to the girls - only nine more weeks of school when you get back. I guess the "nine weeks" triggered their thoughts about report cards.
The friend's daughter chimed in that if she makes all As for the year, her parents were giving her $1,000. I immediately thought it was absurd, but the parents went into a spill about "its the only way to motivate her, etc."
A good report card in our family would be a trip to get ice cream, or as the pre-teen years hit, one of those nutrition teas. I guess I may be behind the times - but is paying for good grades (especially that much) commonplace?

Better than paying for college.
$1k is a bit much though.

We give our kids $20 for every A on their report card, but it has to go into their savings account. My FIL matches it, so really they get $40.

Paying as a reward is fine, but $1,000 is absurd.

My parents would offer big bucks for As but the money they offered for Bs and Cs was enough too.

Don't get me started. We have like 6 of these places in Madison, Mississippi. $8 for water and some supplement.

The more that's posted about modern parenting on the OT, the more faith I lose. No way my parents would have given us that much cash for grades - at most my sister and I would be rewarded with being able to pick out the restaurant we ate at on a Friday night then get dessert after.

A reward is ok. Maybe a meal at a restaurant or new CD. 1,000 dollars is a bit much though.

I am ok with $1,000 as long as they only raise the rate 1-3% each year so the kid can feel what it is like to have a corporate job.

I got an N64 and Mario one year for all A’s
That was a badarse incentive

daughter(no pics,) went to the same school K-12, never less than all As, valedictorian, etc., that was never necessary, nor would I have gone along with that nonsense anyway

Idk man. $1000 is a shite ton less than you would pay a tutor for the year if your kid is smart enough and all they need is the motivation.
Just have to look at it from a different perspective.

Rewarding them and incentivizing them is fine.
If they refuse to make a good grade unless you give them money, that’s totally different.

Yes!
To be fair, this was all As for the year, not just one report card. But still.
My wife and I have an expectation that our kids will do our best on assignments, meet deadlines, and be prepared for tests. Just doing that almost guarantees straight As in today's schools. My daughter had to quarantine for COVID exposure earlier this year. The day she went back she had to take a test that she did not have all of the material and made a 72. It pissed her off. I didn't have to say anything.
