I pay my 8y/o $2 for every 100% he makes on a test. I've only *not* paid him for 6 tests in two years. I don't know if he's smart or greedy. Either way his pay structure is about to shift to traditional chores/allowance.

Idk man. $1000 is a shite ton less than you would pay a tutor for the year if your kid is smart enough and all they need is the motivation.

And if they are dumb enough, you are never at risk of having to pay it

If that's what they respond to, I don't see the problem. It would've worked on me.

Every kid is not internally motivated to get good grades. That amount seems excessive though.

I have a system in place that they get paid for good grades but it’s not anywhere in the neighborhood of $1,000

When I was in school my incentive to make As and Bs only was to avoid being grounded. Once I started driving at 15 (legal age back then), my incentive was to keep my car. It was expected, not rewarded.

My parents would pay for grades. $5 an A $1 a B. My dad also paid for baseball. $1 single, $2 double, $20 a homerun. I lead the league in homers that year.

It’s cheaper in the long run to reward the teacher for giving good grades.

but is paying for good grades (especially that much) commonplace?

I knew some people who got a certain number of dollars per A. My parents knew I was motivated by punishment and said anything under a B led to my TV and video games being taken away until next test with an A or B. Got a C one time and they stuck to it, and never got another C until college.

Will never pay my kids for getting grades they should be getting.

Was never involved in this practice as a student, parent or grandparent. Doled out money as needed to the kids and for certain chores and sometimes simply because I would "catch them doing something right."

I don't do allowance so they don't learn the handout welfare system. Strictly money for chores done, and they choose which chores. Some chores pay more than others.

Also, I double whatever money they save at the end of each year. One of my children won't spend a dime, and is draining my wallet. I had to double $500 last year. The other blows his money as soon as it hits his hands. He doubled $5 last year.

HOLY shite $1000!?

That is kind of absurd. But if they got it like that, then ok I guess.

My parents used to reward me for good grades. But that usually consisted of a trip to CiCi's or Pizza Hut. Or maybe we'd go out for ice cream.

I pay mine 20 per A and 10 per B on each report card.

My middle schooler gets a $500 bonus at the end of the year if he has straight As all year. He gets $100 bonus if he gets A/B all year. He has never made a B so he costs me.

My 10th grader gets $1000 for straight As and $500 for A/Bs. I'll only ever have to pay $500. Has to be over the entire school year.

It has always worked well for us. It establishes the value of discipline, performance and excellence which we hope translates into their careers down the road.

Edit: For AP classes, I do $30 per A and $15 per B.
