Oil producers in a ‘dire situation’ and unable to ramp output, says Oxy CEO

As oil prices surge to the highest levels since 2008, Oxy CEO Vicki Hollub said U.S. producers cannot increase output.
“We’re in a really dire situation,” she said Tuesday at CERAWeek by S&P Global. “We’ve never faced a scenario where we need to grow production, when actually supply chains not only in our industry, but every industry in the world, is being impacted by the pandemic.”
U.S producers were largely expecting to keep production flat this year, and in the face of surging crude prices, output can’t just be ramped, Hollub said.
“Now, with supply chain challenges, it makes any kind of attempt to grow now — and at a rapid pace — very, very difficult,” she said.
Production in the oil-rich Permian Basin is back around its pre-pandemic peak, according to Hollub, who said the region faces significant challenges to grow output further. It’s also the only shale basin in the U.S. that can grow production, she said.
Part of the difficulty is due to the life stage of wells in the region and the need to offset declines from wells that are past their peak. But the industry is also facing challenges that are reverberating throughout the economy, including labor shortages and issues securing raw materials. While the industry had prepared for these hurdles, it had not prepared for the need to crank output rapidly.
“The call for incremental production in the United States, at this point, especially with the supply chain challenges can’t happen at the level that’s needed not only for our country, but for the world. We’re in a significantly challenging scenario today,” she said.

Seems like everyone is pointing the finger at everyone else....except for the people who paused federal leases and are slow walking permits in the gulf.

No doubt it's a challenge. Someone will be able to respond. Maybe just not enough to change the situation in a meaningful way. However, there is a lot of money to be made.

I really, really, really wish they would stop mentioning the word "pandemic"....IT'S OVER PEOPLE.

opening new offshore land cannot possibly increase production any time soon. This is just a propaganda talking point.

I was mocked on the poliboard for years over peak oil proclamations. Funny that no one can turn the taps on supergiant fields right now and fix this.

Tell me what supply chain issues are impacting exploration specifically.
Or don't. Since the whole point of the article is to point the finger at the invisible man behind the tree instead of our own short sighted government decisions.

Oxy is pumping the hell out of the 1280 acres we get oil royalties from.

I kind of feel if adults were running the show we’d have made energy independence a priority long ago and executed a plan to streamline nuclear regulations and build nuclear power plants everywhere we reasonably could. In the meantime while that was occurring nobody should ever have demonized domestic oil production and we should have sought to maximize that production.

Woulda been nice if the Covidians and Karen’s along with government at all branches had been rational and not held on to the false narrative for so long.
They just can’t live without a crisis or despair in their lives. If they can’t find it organically, they manufacture it. Literally.

I see what you did there.

Don't act like global powers haven't made it extremely difficult for operators to discover and develop major offshore areas for more than a decade now. Discoveries are at the lowest level since the 1940s.
Your shite posting is propaganda too.

If labor and materials are also high then there is NOT a lot of money to be made. You still need energy to produce the product and it still costs money last I checked.

Because the majors are going to invest 100mm but save it for the next world war outbreak?
You people are clueless.
