I have been accepted to shreveport and new orleans for medical school. Until recently, I was dead set on Nola. However, with all the recent news on crime, I am wondering if I should reconsider that decision. Anyone with insight would be greatly appreciated.

Even with all of the BS in New Orleans, I would still choose to live there vs Shreveport 100 times out of 100.

NOLA. For all its faults, that city does have one thing going for it. It’s not Shreveport.

Shreveport has its problems yes but COL is much lower and commutes are easier. I would pick SHV personally. Nola can keep its nice part of town car break ins

NOLA, then do your last 2 years in Baton Rouge.

I guess if you are in medical school and cramming constantly and trying to focus on your rotations....a boring place like Shreveport might be pretty good.

New Orleans is basically the movie Titanic without the love story right now. I would pick New Orleans every day over Shreveport. And I grew up in North Louisiana.

And Boo Krewe keep the dream alive. We are all pulling for you.

You’ll get really good at fixing gun shot wounds in either.

I’d imagine both offer exceptional ER doctor training opportunities

Was born and raised in NOLA and currently live in Shreveport....IMO..pick Shreveport. Cost of living is lower, life in general is easier and cheaper, and while pockets of the city have crime...it's not the wild west like NOLA is right now. You can always visit NOLA or other places when you have free time, but as for a place to work/learn and live I have no issue with Shreveport.

As far as leisure goes...it's no NOLA, but our local restaurant scene is pretty solid as are our breweries..were also in striking distance of Dallas for a big city or Arkansas for outdoorsing.

People will shite on it and me relentlessly but Shreveport is alright.

Isn't NOLA the harder one to get into.
I would choose that one.
Medical training is always better in larger cities because you see more types of cases.

Shreveport is not a bad second option.

I know two that went to Shreveport because they didn't get into New Orleans and are now doing their residency in New Orleans.

Yep...

...if you leave it sit long enough, they'll even break into your town car.

This is why I would pick S'port. NOLA is a pain in the arse to get around in. You'll only be there a few years, I'm assuming, so even if S'port isn't for you, you won't be there forever.

Don't know your hobbies and not sure how much free time you have in med school, but there's more to do in the ArkLaTex area than folks on here let on about.
