Skier from Cali spurned US Ski Team and joined China's Olympic Ski team

She could be America’s next Olympic darling — a stunning 18-year-old skier who signed with Victoria’s Secret and plans to attend Stanford after she vies for gold in Beijing.
But Eileen Gu won’t be competing for the US.
Instead, in a move that’s baffled members of the American skiing community, San Francisco-born and -bred Gu has joined Team China.
“I have decided to compete for China in the 2022 Winter Olympics,” Gu announced in a 2019 tweet, months after she earned her first World Cup win in Italy at 15.
“It is not my place to judge, but Eileen is from California, not from China, and her decision [to ski for China] seems opportunistic,” said Jen Hudak, a former Winter X Games gold medalist for the USA women’s team.
“This makes me sad,” added Hudak, who retired in 2014 after knee injuries derailed her career and has since co-founded Escapod Trailers. “It would be nice to see the medals going to America.”
Meanwhile, in China, Gu will be supported by the government, said a former X Games athlete who asked not to be identified. “The amount of money and the amount of support she gets from China will be so much higher than what she would get in America,” he said.

People do this every year. Why is this a story?

she doesn't know who she is....the capitalist in her is making a run for the money but she's a propaganda piece for a totalitarian communist government that would pass her around their party leaders beds for kicks

Hopefully she shreds her knee on her first run down the hill

China probably has leverage over her somehow.

It's pretty common for second tier US athletes who don't make the team to represent countries they have some ethnic connection to. The Greek Olympic baseball team last Olympics was made up almost entirely of Greek Americans, many of whom had never set foot in Greece before becoming Olympians. The fact that it's China, a rival and potential enemy, definitely leaves a sour taste though.

Not watching these Olympics. It will be a China slobberfest about how great they are.

Team USA isn't steamrolling anyone. If you could go back to the Summer Olympics board, you can see the decline or American Exceptionalism is very, very real.

People Think this is a US vs China thing but really it's a skier wanting to compete that couldn't make the US team.

An American using China for financial gain is about as American as it gets. Patriotism and underpaid labor aside, it's comparable to an American choosing a Chinese manufacturer for better profits instead of manufacturing American. I can't really blame her any more than the many many many American business making similar decisions.
