This is on the players and the people they allow to influence their decisions. Players wanted more control, players wanted money, players wanted power.

Well, now they have it, and many will learn a hard lesson.

I think the portal in and of itself is a risk option for most (as it should be). Giving up money in hand for the prospect of MAYBE getting more money is a risky proposition. If they want to gamble and lose, surely they're not seeking our sympathy..

What a waste Netherly never played again. He would probably have played significant minutes at corner for us the last 2 years with all the injuries.

He was terrible.

Stereotypes don’t develop in a vacuum.

These kind of things need to be publicized so kids know what they are walking into. Because of these types of numbers I think the portal will level off and the numbers will drop. Hundreds of kids losing free scholarships and having to go home will be a welcome wake up call for everyone thinking the grass is greener.

You will never hear from them again because no one cares. Once the player enters the portal, virtually no one gaf. Who was the CB that entered the portal in the spring of 2017 or 2018? I think Delly did an article on him how he never got picked up and couldn’t finish his degree either.

I’d certainly take him back. I though he looked the part in limited action.

There's no talking sense into a lot of these kids' heads. They have an inflated sense of self worth and all think they are going to the NFL. Also, they were used to being pandered to and treated like a king during their initial recruitment and think it will happen again. For most, it will not. Hard for me to feel sorry for them, especially since I'm sure the coaches try to tell them this.

I admit I’ve been a bit off the CFB grid since the portal and NIL got going, but does a player going in the portal lose their scholarship???

I always thought they could withdraw from the portal with no penalty. Like in MB’s case.

Does the team have to accept them back?

Sorry for the basic question just kind to tuning back in and trying to understand

Yes that’s my understanding the university has to offer them their scholarship back. Again it is likely they are replaced, all these things I would imagine make roster management really tough.

The NCAA didn't do anything to those players but give them options. If anything they're helping some of these kids realize that poorly considered actions have consequences. Good life lesson.

The Colleges work on a year to year scholarship deal. No players have to their scholarship offered at again.

As someone else said, scholarships are only handed out on a one year basis. No one is guaranteed a scholarship for the next year whether they enter the portal or not. Many coaches are choosing not to take the players back as a deterrent to players exploring that route in the future. In many cases, players are in the portal because they were already told there wouldn’t be a scholarship for them.

FYI it’s not always the kid’s decision. The also gives the coaches like Saban an easy way to tell the kids to hit the road they no longer have a scholarship. Called the process. But it’s easy for the “fans” to blame the kid.

This is not true.

The truth about guaranteed scholarships

quote:

In 2015, the NCAA Division I “Power 5” Schools implemented a rule that has the effect of “protecting” Division I student-athletes from having their athletic scholarship cancelled or not renewed for any athletics reason. Quite simply, a coach cannot take away a scholarship for poor athletic performance.

Does it still happen? Of course. And with the portal, coaches are forcing (or strongly encouraging) players to hit the portal.

But scholarships are technically not year-to-year any more in the P5.

Also, if a player enters the portal, the school is under no obligation to hold his scholarship.

They also are under no obligation to offer a scholarship to “super seniors” or 6th-year players.

Thanks for the correction. I’m not sure how I missed on that change. I knew the Big 10 and PAC-12 had moved to guaranteed scholarship and there was intense debate to make it universal, but somehow I missed (or forgot) that it had been implemented for all P5 programs.

The team doesn’t have to accept them back, but the team can and often does. When you’re in a situation like we’ve seen at LSU the past couple of years - way below the 85 scholarship limit - it doesn’t make a ton of sense to let a player’s scholarship go to waste unless the kid is a legit locker room problem and you’re better off without him.

It gets hairy for teams that are using all 85 scholarships though. In that case it comes down to how talented the player is, and whether the coach would rather keep him or give his scholarship to a new recruit. I suspect this happens a lot more at the G5 level where players are more likely to use all of their eligibility, and transfers are less likely to find a new home.

The other thing that gets a little hairy for the players in the portal is academic eligibility. I haven’t seen much talk about it, but if a player isn’t attending classes and falls behind on their progress-toward-degree requirements, they can completely frick themselves. Nobody wants to take a kid who isn’t academically eligible unless they have huge upside. On the flip side, the player’s current school doesn’t get “refunded” the initial counter (against the 25/year cap) unless the player actually transfers out and arrives at his new school academically eligible. So at least it doesn’t directly incentivize schools to let these guys ruin their lives over a potential transfer.

This goes to my point. When pointing out this argument that many players don’t find homes I would say LSU never has that happen and the kids that can’t find a home if they leave us should likely not be playing college football. When they open up “free agency” the consequences that follow are the talent evaluation becomes more exact and people get washed out. Welcome to the real world boys. I’m all for the kids getting a chance to succeed, but we can’t forget that getting a scholarship in itself is a bigger chance to succeed than the vast. majority of the US population. If kids that are given that opportunity want to throw that into the wind for greener pastures the real world shows that there is risk to any reward.
