School can sign as many transfers as possible but only 7 to match portal losses, right?

Is it correct that a school may sign as many transfers as it wants and the rule allows for 7 extra signees to match their players they have lost through the portal, is that correct. So for instance LSU could sign 18 high school players and up to 14 transfers with 7 of them allowed to match losses within the transfer portal. during a specified period.

That’s correct. You can use your spots of the 25 on transfers plus the 7 match transfers. LSU is gonna hopefully hammer the portal this year. Will certainly expedite the rebuild.

No reason not to sign max from portal
It may not be a long term thing

Roster management will play a big role in how quickly we get back on track

We need to find a doctor that can falsify career ending injuries to process players that aren’t working out to sign more than 25 initial counters.

How many quality linebackers, D.Tackles, O lineman, etc are you going to find in the portal. Most are backups that couldn’t find their way onto the field at their respective schools. Your signing other teams backups. Plus you fight other schools for the best ones. I wouldn’t count on the portal to build a winner!

We can sign 32 total.
Go do a quick roster check boss, we won’t have 53 kids after the bowl game.
And we won’t be anywhere near 85 at fall camp. More like 72-75.

Could NIL be used to recruit transfer portal guys that are then classified as “walkons” to get our numbers up?

If we were up near where we should be numbers-wise, your argument would have a little validity. As it stands, we don’t have enough bodies. Never mind the fact that a lot of the ones we had this year don’t seem completely invested, we need numbers. End of story. Once we get dug out of the hole we’re in, maybe we can start getting picky again.

In theory, it seems possible. It was brought up in a thread a few days ago. It doesn’t currently seem outlined in NIL protocols, and BYU has an NIL deal for all walkons.

Just something to point out, I know everybody wants us to “hammer the portal” and sign as many transfers as possible. It makes sense from the standpoint of getting guys who can play sooner, especially if the alternative is taking weaker-than-normal high school recruits.
That said, it’s a balancing act for Kelly right now. He has to walk the line between filling immediate needs and managing the roster long term. If you take too many guys with 2 years of eligibility (or less) you can end up with an even more massive roster hole in a couple of years.
One thing I haven’t seen discussed much, though, is that the new rule allows for a one-time transfer with immediate eligibility. That means that any players you take from the portal cannot transfer again without either getting a hardship waiver or sitting out a year. So it will be interesting to see the attrition rates over time for transfers vs. high school recruits under the new rules.

quote:that fact should be setting off alarm bells in Indianapolis and light bulbs should be going off in every ops building. And I'm talking going forward after this year with the 7 extra. I'll put it as bluntly as possible:

1. For a recruit we sign, anytime during his eligibility he can transfer and be eligible immediately at his new team. No harm, no foul... regardless if he signs an LOI or not. He takes a spot in the 25.
2. A transfer in will have less incentive to transfer out because they will have to sit, just like the original LOI system put in place. He will count against the same 25 limit.
So if transfers are depleting your numbers as a program, you are better off not recruiting some high schoolers and using those spots for transfers because, in the end, you are more likely to get 3 years out of them rather than 1 for the transfer out.
And with the first transfer being a freebee- you'll see more higher rated players (the same ones we chased as recruits) in the portal over time. Still plenty of backups, but many of those will be highly rated freshmen that thought they should've gotten playing time and are now bolting.
ETA: and the contact rules for a player in the portal are much more liberal than the rules concerning a recruit in high school. It takes much less resources and is much easier to court a transfer than a high schooler. This is just lagniappe.
ETA #2: and LSU better lean how to medically retire players (who experience a miraculous recovery later) PDQ or we will never catch up.

I could see FCS schools becoming a minor league for the FCS. The QB from Incarnate Word was lightly recruited had a good season this year and is transferring to a FBS school. Same thing with the W. Kentucky QB that transferred from FCS.

We have like 50 scholarship players before people graduate
I dont Think we need to process anyone

Dude… most of the stud players were backups at one point.

It was tounge in cheek comment. This is how Bama gets away with taking more than 25 initial counters every year.

That is not true. Va has three starters in portal.
Florida has 4 and two part time starters.
Arkansas has 6.
It goes on and on.
Was not Johnson and Brennan starters at LSU?

This makes a lot more sense, thanks for clarification.
In that case, the portal is the future. Supply will outweigh demand in the near-term, and in the portal you have a bit of a better idea in what you are getting, and an incoming portal player has less time to lose and less likely to transfer again. Players will churn through the portal at a very high rate
It sucks for the sport, but LSU is a position to benefit greatly from this. Have to add 32 this year and better to not be all true fresh

The way the rules are written is wrong. You shouldn't be limited to 7. You should be able replace player for player. If Kid can now freely leave. Then you be able to give a scholarship to replace everyone that transfers.
