Electrical Baws — Rewiring Christmas lights

Strings are up on the tree, and one of the plugs shorted. I’ve isolated the problem as the male plug on a single string. Plan to cut it off and wire in a plug from another string.
How is this going to burn my house down, and how can I avoid that outcome?
The plan is to strip the wires, twist them together with quick connects, then electrical tape the shite out of it. Tips?

Sounds fool proof to me

Bunch of engineers on here that’ll tell you how to build and rewire your entire house, even if you don’t ask them. If it doesn’t work, it’s because there’s something wrong with the lights you bought.

Home Depot sells plug ends. They open and have terminals for the wires.

Is this a good idea?
You be the judge.

Lights should be going on sale right about now. If you don’t want to burn your house down, throw that shite away and spend $8 to buy another string.

if its just 2 wires you have a 50/50 shot the first go. if that doesnt work the first time switch them around. weather proof the splice with tight electric tape or liquid electric tape , or even shrink wrap tubing. get the right splice connectors and dont just twist them shits like some crack head.

Doesn't matter with Christmas lights. There's no dedicated hot or neutral. That's why you can plug the ends, unplug, then rotate 180 and still plug back together.

Just buy a male plug from a hardware store, if you don’t want to take the lights down and swap out the string. Cutting a plug off of another string means you’ll have two fricked up strings.
Out of curiosity, how do you know it’s shorted? Did it visibly arc/smoke, trip the breaker, or what?

I used that as a kind of shorthand.
As you push the plug in, there is a brief moment when the lights come on. Then as you push it all the way in, there’s a faint clicking noise (like an arc) and lights go out.
It’s readily repeatable, so it’s not a breaker.

Change the fuse inside the plug.

Careful OP-
In 2021, one of the wires may not identify as what you might assume to be the appropriate polarity.
There is nothing you can now do about it, you must accept it’s right to do so and give it a day off every year to celebrate it’s diversity and memorialize the historic struggle of wires that had a manufacturing polarity forced upon them without the option to choose.
