Tetons/Yellowstone or Glacier, with Glacier being the clear winner in my book.

Let me know if you land on Chicago. Happy to provide suggestions.

Chicago over DC all day long. Go when the Cubs are in town.

OP is traveling with family, what makes Chicago better than DC? I’ve only been to DV with the family, but, with all the Smithsonian museums , all the history and mount Vernon it was a great family trip.

Great list, we have been to almost all except Maine. Thinking about it this coming summer of 2022. Live in Louisiana so where is the best place to fly into? We enjoy staying in one place and using it as a hub. We love a week in one place. We are a little older and do not like long road trips.

We drove to Maine but picked up friends at the Portland airport. We spent 4 nights in Bar Harbor, which was probably 1 too many, and then worked our way back to Portland. Rather than staying in one place for a week you might be better staying in two places. I guess it just depends how far you want to drive in one day once you see everything close to your accommodations.

If you search the TB you can find a lot of info about Maine and New England in general. And maybe start a new post with your question. There are some regular posters that know a lot about that area.

Tell us more. Where did you stay? What did you do?

We drove through Ouray from Durango to Montrose this summer; stopped for lunch. We liked it a lot too and would like to go back and stay for at least a few days.

Come to Colorado. I used to be a “not big on hiking” guy, until I moved here. Hiking here changed my mind completely. It’s absolutely stunning, and adventurous. I live in Breck. Hikes around here can be longer and tough. I’d suggest going to either Steamboat Springs or Telluride.

Steamboat has a great lil downtown, you can float on the Yampa river, watch air balloons, and go to Strawberry hot Springs.

Telluride imo is the most beautiful town in the entire country. You might have to do little hikes, but trust me they are worth it. They have gorgeous waterfalls with easy access. You can go over to Ouray, another beautiful box canyon town with awesome waterfalls surrounding the town. Drive the Million Dollar highway to Silverton.

Staying right on the coast in Monterey, CA or San Diego in the dead of summer (or winter) is awesome.

we go to telluride every year for a music festival in July i agree it’s my favorite town I’ve ever been. It ain’t cheap but it’s beautiful, friendly and just about perfect in the summer

we swap out our route from Denver each time and make a two week trip out of it. Aspen/basalt, sand dunes, buena vista, Cortez/Mesa verde, vail, Breckinridge etc. this year we are going Denver>crested butte>telluride>BV>Denver

there are 4 national parks in Colorado and dozens of other state and federal parks/monuments/forests/etc to visit plus damn near every mountain town you pass thru is cooler than the next. Last trip we spent a whole day hanging out in Rico for example

Rent a jeep or UTV, Ouray is the Jeep capital of Colorado with too many trails to mention

Horseback riding on Red Mountain with Action Adventure tours

Box Canyon Falls, Ouray perimeter trail, day trip to Telluride(1 hr drive), Ouray hot springs, tons of restaurants and watering holes...

We rented from VRBO, spectacular week.

Hell just the drive from Silverton north to Ouray is amazing. keep your eyes on the road though..

I love the mountains, you could
go anywhere from Colorado to Montana.

Hiking, biking, kayaks, white water rafting in early spring. There’s plenty to do.

Can you define “break the bank”? Because there isn’t a better place in the US in the summer than Maine, but it can be pricey.

Fly to San Diego and take a slow leisurely drive up the Pacific Coast Highway to the Napa Valley.
That is my favorite road trip in the US.

I was in Africa and Europe last year and their "restrictions" were far less than the US (really, just none at all). Curious as to what you're referring to.

For summer, I think the Pacific Northwest is the best, a lot due to weather. Washington and Oregon essentially have infinite beautiful places to explore. I'm not that big on hiking myself, but there are lots of short hikes that take you to special places. e.g. I have a book with all of the fire lookout towers in the state and how to get to them.

Take a look at High Top Rock:

The total round trip is 2 miles I think, but man it's spectacular. You can walk on the balcony of the structure and feel like it's the end of the earth - and it's looking right across at Rainier! Like I said, there are essentially infinite gems like this.
