The only problem with this is the length of careers prior to LSU. Kelly is by far the most experienced coach we've ever hired. Miles and Saban were trending upwards when we hired them, Kelly isn't. I'm not saying he's on the way down, but his situation isn't really comparable to any coach we've ever hired.

Ed Orgeron winning a NC cemented the perception of just how strong a program and job LSU is.

In 2021 you look at Saban's NC at LSU and say "well, of course he won one." With Miles, you could say he took what Saban built and sustained it. You could even argue his NC was partially comprised of Saban recruited players.

But Ed winning a NC? No one could have predicted that. The guy (even before the last two seasons) was looked at by the rest of CFB as a good recruiter, but otherwise a cartoon character who had so little football understanding (relative to most D-1 coaches) that he NEVER should have been hired as a power conf HC. Yet, HE dominated CFB for one season...something he NEVER could have done at any other school.

Even before Kelly was hired the pendulum had shifted from you can win a NC at LSU to you probably WILL win a NC at LSU. Kelly hasn't hidden the fact that's why he is here. A NC is the one thing he doesn't have in an otherwise great coaching career. He knew he could get close at ND, but probably wasn't going to get one. So at 60 years old he saw a place where the last 3 HC's have gotten the one thing he wants.

If Kelly gets a NC then I think the debate probably ends that LSU is the best place to go if you want to win a NC.

Thanks - obviously either a ND, Oklahoma, or Alabama poster (or someone that hates math)

I'm not missing the point on anything. The rant told me prior to the season that cbk would do better here than his career average prior do coming here.

Well as of right now he has won exactly 75% of his games here at LSU. Which is roughly what our last 3 coaches averaged while they coached here.

Their winning percentage AT LSU was 74.6%. Brian Kelly COMES IN with a winning percentage of 73.9%.

This is great and all, but this doesn’t guarantee he will match the winning percentages of the other coaches.

This year he will most likely finish in the 60-70% win percentage, less than his career win %.

I think Kelly will be fine, but if he never matches his career win % here, is LSU a king breaker?

Success is due to a combination of talent, preparation, strategy, in-game execution.

Coach has to recruit talent.
Coach has to hire assistants that can maximize available talent.
Coaches have to mentally prepare players and develop strategy.

Players have to execute the game plan.
Coaches have to adjust game plan as opponent adjusts theirs.

It starts with recruiting talent, but coaching is also important (Captain Obvious statement).

Jerry Stovall's winning percentage appears to be incorrect. How can you be below .500 when you won more games than you lost? 22-21-2 works out to be 23-22 with the ties figured in to the equation. That's 23/45 which is .51.

In defense of Stovall, he stepped forward in a really terrible situation.

I think Stovall was actually the head coach of LSU's freshman team at one time, but that was a long time ago so I really can't recall if this is fact. I think he was, though.
