Field of Dreams thoughts

The wife had never seen it so I made her watch it recently. Her first take was that the whole movie was a dream. I never looked at it that way but sorta makes it seem more realistic. There were no flashbacks tho that would imply that. Perhaps that would’ve been a better approach.
Also, all Ray talked about in the beginning was how sweet Shoeless Joe’s swing was. Then in the first scene where he came on the field, Liotta had prob one of the most unathletic swings in baseball. I love Liotta but could they not find a better baseball player for the role? That role really didn’t have much dialogue so would’ve made more sense.
Also, when talking about Ty Cobb wanting to play, Liotta did burst out his goodfellas laugh which made me lol.

I always laughed at the Ray Liotta casting because Shoeless Joe Jackson was born and raised in the Greenville, South Carolina area in the late 19th century and early 20th century. They couldn't find a southerner to play the part?

or at least someone that could swing a bat left handed.

It’s like making a movie referring to Tiger Woods and having Mathew Mcaunehey play Woods.

"Have a catch" was terrible phrasing.

It's an egregiously bad miscasting IMO. Everything he says sounds like he's being an a-hole, and the looks on his face are even worse...he just looks mad all the time. You're supposed to sort of like Joe, but Liotta is just so damn unlikable as him.

Haven't seen it in 20 years but I miss those kinds of movies. Lot of good movies came out around that time and just told a good story. Didn't need to have a bunch of extremely ham-fisted social issues thrust* in your face.
*Many of them had a social component, it just wasn't so deliberate and obnoxious.

Honestly, any older videos of baseball swings just don't look the same as modern baseball swings. I can't specifically recall Liotta's swing, but also don't recall it standing out as being a travesty to the story.
I do agree with the southerner thing. Not that they needed a southerner, but Shoeless Joe was an illiterate, country guy who was just good at baseball. The depiction by Liotta just doesn't come close to that representation.

No.

Yeah...few things drive me crazier than seeing an actor play a sports figure and being so terrible at it. I get it...most normal movie fans would have no idea what a guy's actual swing should look like, but sports fans likely will...and just like an accent if it's wrong it's obvious.
Obviously, almost no on know what Jackson's swing looked like, but we all know it didn't look like that! And if they were gonna' do a movie about Griffey, Jr...you'd damn sure better have a guy that can somewhat mimic that swing.
Also, if you don't shed a tear when he asks his Dad to play catch, you might be a Communist.

On the flip side, when you have someone like Costner play a golfer when he’s actually a decent golfer, it makes the character even more believable.

Overrated.
It's a decent movie but it's down the line on the list of great baseball movies. "Have a catch" is such a dumb line.

Sure, they could have made it look more authentic, BUT!
As a HUGE baseball fan, this movie is not about baseball. Downvote until you crap your pants, but if you want to start criticizing the little things, you can list them for days but you are completely missing the movie. DONE!

And I know this was discussed recently here, but Costner was actually a baseball player growing up and had the pleasure to be cut in college by Augie, lol. How he let them not get some of the baseball aesthetics correct still bothers me.

It’s still a good movie, but there’s nothing wrong getting details correct also.

Not a complaint, just an observation. My first thought is there have been a lot of Field of Dream threads lately. Did a streaming service just recently pick it up?

Charlie Sheen was solid as 'Shoeless Joe'

Where can we confirm the details of Graham transforming from player to doctor by stepping outside of the field? I'd like to offer my assistance to this detail correcting effort, but I'm not sure where to start on this issue.
Did he actually step with his right foot first? Was he actually wearing black pants when he transformed? So many details to fact check. I wanna be a part of this effort.

Separating arguments should not be that difficult. The idea of using correct baseball vernacular or believable swinging mechanics doesn’t need to also encompass the metaphysical nature the story.
But please continue to argue with yourself.

when did he play Joe?
he was in Eight Men Out, but he wasn't Joe Jackson. DB Sweeney was.
