Kind of surprised not to see a thread about this show already, but then again, I’m not surprised.

Because it’s on PBS?

What country other than Russia played a bigger role in ending the Holocaust? Could we have done more, earlier? Probably. But this revisionist opinion of history that we’re the actual bad guys because of our lack of wanting to get involved early on is insane.
I’m just rolling my eyes at a potential new wave of WWII history where America is really the villain and what we are doing is blown totally out of proportion compared to our worldly peers. Nobody does self loathing better than America right now.

Ken Burns last week said that DeSantis shipping minorities to Martha’s Vineyard is the equivalent of the Holocaust, so I’m no longer all that concerned with what Ken Burns has to say these days. He’s lost his fricking mind. New York Post
Yeah, can’t tell the difference can you?

I just saw an interview with him recently. He is a deranged liberal.
I wonder how many of the 400k Americans that died in WW2 feel like we didn't do enough. Anybody suggesting anything of the sort needs their arse kicked.

Is that what his new show is suggesting? If so, I won’t bother watching. It’s too bad. I enjoyed his earlier stuff.

He’s getting skewered for that idiotic comparison in the comments of the video you posted. Frick Ken Burns.

I caught the episode from last night, I didn't feel they pushed hard against the US other than railing hard against Charles Lindbergh. Of course all of that changed on December 7, 1941. The episode spent a lot of time on the one Jewish family trying to get their siblings over to the US, which they finally did.

I suggest watching it for yourself and forming your own opinion. This board can get a little extreme when it comes to Ken Burns, just see the threads about his Vietnam series.

Literally almost every one of the allies until we had war declared on us by Japan in 1941?
This documentary is about how America largely failed to live up to it's self-proclaimed ideals and not only sat on the sideline for years, but many of the same undercurrents that fed fascism in Germany were being fed(and embraced) at home.
A reminder, the country was largely split on intervening from 1939-1941, a critical period of the Nazi advancement and emboldening, when the Nazis began to ramp up their exterminationist rhetoric and policies toward Jews/Gays/Socialists/Communists etc. With famous celebrities like Charles Lindberg being unabashedly pro German and Father Coughlin, the Rush Limbaugh/Tucker of his day, was a fervent anti-semite and supporter of the Nazis actions against the Jews, gays, and socialists, and commanded the largest radio audience in the country, speaking mostly to the same rural/small town audiences modern firebrands do. Even after Pearl Harbor he was demanding America stay out....Though thankfully sentiment fully shifted and that did him in as an influencer.

The biggest issue was clamping down on immigration with no consideration of refugees from Nazi Germany. Probably costs hundreds of thousands of lives, and it was a policy largely based on xenophobia and some underlying Antisemitism.
Obviously once we get involved in the war it can’t be understands how crucial then US was in ending the Holocaust.
The US isn’t a bad guy, but like a lot of the world we could have done way more very easily.

Tell me what part of that is historically incorrect?
Truly, some of you are so far down the rabbit hole that actual history, facts, and any attempt at critical thinking are now enemies

I watched episode 1. It was very good.
The US is not portrayed as the bad guy; the US was tied by politics of the day and it showed that. I’ll watch the last two episodes later; it is too intense to binge all at once.

Comparing Rush and Tucker to Charles Lindbergh. You have to be fricking insane to think they are remotely comparable.

Oh please, history and facts are the enemy of communists like yourself. “Oh that wasn’t actual communism, if I ran it, it would have worked.” I love how you narcissistic assholes somehow think you are smarter than someone like Vladimir Lenin and that you are actually wise.

Try reading again, I said Father Coughlin, and yes, Coughlin very much was the Rush Limbaugh of his era.
A firebrand conservative populist preacher that was far and away the most popular voice on radio, consisting mostly of an audience of small town and rural followers. And yes, he spent years defending Nazi violence against the Jews and deviants as he saw them thru the lens they did.
Frankly, you would have been the type that would have been right there cheering on his vile hatred.
But as is with most history, there is not one or two causations. Plenty of xenophobia and crippling isolationism that turned a blind eye to atrocity on both sides. However, it was FDR that wanted to intervene sooner but was politically hamstrung by his political opposition and some in his party.
