CHELSEA, Ala. (WBRC) - The Shelby County Coroner and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after a 3-month-old boy was killed Thursday afternoon by what is described as a wolf-hybrid and reportedly kept as a pet by the baby’s family.

It happened in Chelsea on County Road 440 in Chelsea, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department.

Chelsea First Responders, Shelby County Deputies and Shelby County Animal Control Officers responded to the scene and took the baby to Grandview Medical Center. The baby died a short time later. The animal was euthanized at the scene by a veterinarian at the request of law enforcement. It was taken to the Alabama State Diagnostics Laboratory in Auburn for further examination and investigation. There is no threat to the public.

I wonder what breed the wolf was mixed with.

We had a wolf hybrid mixed with a Siberian Husky for about 13 years. Great dog.

But, obligatory, could’ve been me.

save the taxpayers some money and as a society gain some closure. drag them out into the street in front of their home and put a bullet between their eyes. no trial or jail time needed. end that family line ASAP.

You're getting downvoted but this is gross negligence.

You don't leave a 3 month old accessible to any dog, particularly any dog of any size, and one that's "part wolf?"

I don't have particularly nice things to say about these idiots.

My mom had a full blooded timber wolf as a pet for a long time and he was a big goofball... But he was socialized properly and trained... I'm going with these people in particular didn't do any of that and they essentially had a wild animal in the house

My brother brought one home when he was in the USMC. It was >80% Tundra wolf, balance Alaskan Malamute from what I recall. Dog was pretty cool, only times I saw him be aggressive it was towards other dogs that kept messing with him. Even then he’d just grip, shake and let them go.

My first guess would be that it's just a malamute. It's a widely held misconception that they are wolf hybrids. They're not hybrids, at least not recent hybrids, but they are considered "primitive breeds" or "natural breeds" with strong wolf characteristics that weren't bred out. It shows in appearance and a strong packish instinct. Huskies share those to some degree.

I had a friend in Tulsa in the 90’s that had Siberian/wolf mix too.

Strange “dog” behavior but never aggressive. Just different from everyday run of the mill pets. Had to keep in mind not to be either dominant nor submissive with him.

There is no such thing as a “trained” wild animal. They might see you as a part of their pack, but that doesn’t make them a pet.

My friend has pictures of his newborn with his dog that is like 30% pit bull and it makes me incredibly uncomfortable.

I’m not having any pet that can take me or that I have to remember ground rules for dealing with it. Nope.
