New York City’s crackdown on Airbnb and short-term rentals goes into effect

NYC’s ‘de facto ban’ on Airbnb is already removing listings

Local Law 18 is now in effect and it limits how Airbnb operates in NYC and it bans short-term rentals entirely for most owners.

All short-term rental hosts in NYC must register with the city, and only those who live in the place they’re renting and are present when someone is staying can qualify.

Meh. Living next to an AirBNB sucks.

I once lived next to one and it was a problem. The HOA banned it but until they did it was a shitty situation to deal with random people every weekend and/or people renting a house just to party. I had golf clubs stolen one weekend, caught kids throwing a baseball around all of the parking (it was a condo), etc

I am all about capitalism but I am also all about zoning and keeping property values up. Airbnb has gotten around zoning by letting residential areas operate as commercial property and that is an issue.

Live next to an Airbnb and get back to us. It sucks if you purposely move into a residential-zoned neighborhood only to be disturbed by an Airbnb.

So pretty much what AirBnb was meant to be before the investors ruined it.

Airbnb has basically skated around zoning in every incorporated area it operates in. This is basically just a way to get zoning back under control.

If you aren't happy about it then move to an area with no zoning or apply to have your house/area rezoned.

If they put a trash dump in your neighborhood and called it AirT&D and skated zoning laws you wouldn't be OK with it.

Good. AirBnB’s are scams and do nothing but drive up surrounding property values

I think the bigger issue here is you lived in a condo.

There is an air bnb in my neighborhood and noone has a problem with it....the people looking to rent a whole house in South Shreveport aren't really an issue.

I don't think air bnb can do something about this though. Maybe better customer screening, any complaints and you can't rent anymore? Pricing rentals to match area? I have half watched enough of my wife's relatiy shows to know that it's a new tactic of the trashy pat dwelling crowd to rent air bnbs for family parties....that shocking are a trash fest.

Idk....but whatever the solution I will never agree that government intervention is it.

Laugh all you want. They had already hit one car with a baseball. Shitty parents were just letting them do it. The shitty parents were the last straw before the HOA/condos association banned STRs.

Sometimes government regulation is needed. If there were no regulations in place, CVS would have a pharmacy monopoly. Your wait times for prescriptions would be 3 days and they could charge whatever they please because there is no competition

Those firing up Airbnb to look for a short-term rental in New York City right now may find the pickings a bit slim. Officials in the city have started enforcing new regulations mandating that hosts will have to file a registration application — and meet a set of requirements — to be able to rent homes to guests for less than 30 days. Hosts can only rent out homes for short-term stays if they're also staying there, and only two guests are allowed at a time. These requirements are part of old and existing rules on rentals, however, and only the Short-Term Rental Registration Law itself is new.

It was in a wealthy area on the beach and I was only going to be there for a few years so I rented. Basically the only option without a $10K+ rental rate.

Doesn't change the fact that STRs drive down property values and skirt zoning ordinances already in place that have existed for decades.

I bet you scream and cry for your local government to restrict every new housing development or housing complex that gets proposed.
