Has anyone been to Amman, Jordan?

I have a young cousin flying out of Huntsville this morning going to Amman for a month. He is going with a company he has been contracting with for 3 months that has hired him in permanent starting today. He's quite young (23) and is more like a son to me than a cousin. I'm curious if anyone has spent time there and can give me a few pointers to tell him. Is there anything he should do or shouldn't do while there. It looks as if speaking English is pretty common there and looking on google maps, I see alot of English signage. Any help or advice is much appreciatted. He is a helicopter mechanic.

I just flew in and out there last week on a Jordan trip. Amman is a large city, 5 million people. It is pretty populous with the apartments built on top of one another in a hilly area. Traffic sucked but not as bad as Istanbul or Cairo. Most signs I the city are in both Arabic and English but it gets to mostly Arabic once you move outside of the city. Close proximity to the Dead Sea, Aqaba, wadi rum and with a US passport easy entry at the Amman/ Israel border.

I lived there almost a year. It’s pretty safe. Lots of foreign nationals, especially hot Russian chicks. Jordan is probably one of the most western countries in the area. You can drink, they have Christmas decorations at the local department stores, etc. Tell him to steer clear of Zarqa (a suburb) though.
As the poster above stated, Wadi Rum, Aqaba, the Dead Sea, and Petra are must visits. If he’s a Roman history fan, then Jerash is also a must-see.

Spent 3 weeks there in 1995. Was very westernized back then. Nearly everyone speaks English because it was under British rule for a long time. People are generally nice. But don’t forget you are in the Middle East. I would stay pretty close to the his work site and I would never venture off alone or without a big group.

Even though Jordan is considered a bit more liberal than some other middle eastern countries, I would definitely not get drunk in public.

For a few days in 2010. I got driven from hotel to site. Hotel was set up like a community of all you need.

I lived in Amman for seven months. English is very commonly spoke, especially in certain parts of the city. Lots of tourist stuff to do. Jordan is a cool country, and I like the people there a lot too. There are a few areas to avoid, but for the most part it's pretty safe.

I'd rather spend 3 months in Jordan than a week in Chicago. It is far safer.

Never been to Jordan but been in other parts of the region.
From a crime standpoint, I would imagine it’s quite safe, the only thing that could be worse compared to the US would probably be pickpocketing of a female tourist who is not accompanied by a man.
I would certainly not recommend your cousin to get drunk in public and nothing is going to have the atmosphere of an SEC bar
but a few drinks at a hotel bar is certainly acceptable and the cops aren’t looking to target buzzed/non-disruptive but slightly drunk tourists.

avoid Zarqa and avoid Ma'an. fortunately, they are both kind of off the beaten path, so they are easy to avoid.
100% go to Wadi Rum and spend a night in the desert with the bedouins. best thing we did there.

THIS right here. Especially if he is young, we all know how it can get away from you sometimes. Friendly country but you don't want to go to jail there or run afoul of the law. I would probably advise him to just stay sober for the trip if he isn't mature enough to really be on top of it.

Jordan is a decent country with some nice attractions. Its also pro Western for the most part.

Jordan, overall is a pretty cool country with some very cool people. In fact, all of the countries in that region (Israel, Lebanon- North, Jordan and Syria) are all pretty laid back in terms of the people. I found Jordan and surprisingly,Syria to be inviting.
In fact, in Syria, it's about 20% Christian, and they aren't messed with at all and in the Christian parts of Damascus there was a pretty good restaurant/bar scene where all the rich Muslims would go to get drunk....and coked up. Have not been there in 15 years but had a great time when I went.
