Police are investigating the death of a New England man who attended Sunday night’s Patriots game at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Authorities did not immediately say whether his death was related to an altercation he was involved in.

The Norfolk County District Attorney's Office said 53-year-old Dale Mooney of Newmarket, New Hampshire, died following an incident in the 300-tier section of Gillette Stadium.

The DA's office said police and fire personnel responded to the section where Mooney was in apparent need of medical attention at approximately 10:57 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities said Mooney was transported to the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, where he was pronounced dead.

"Numb. I just feel numb," his wife, Lisa Mooney, said. "I just can’t even believe this is for real."

Lisa Mooney said Dale was a season ticket holder for 30 years.

“I want to know what happened," Lisa Mooney told WCVB. "What caused this?”

Mooney's wife said her husband, a father of two, went to Gillette Stadium from their New Hampshire home with three friends who told her they were verbally taunted by other fans during the game.

Joseph Kilmartin, another fan who witnessed the incident, described it as a violent confrontation toward the end of the fourth quarter of the game between the Patriots and the Dolphins.

Video Kilmartin recorded shows Dale Mooney as he approaches a group of fans on the 300-level of the stadium.

"He basically grabbed another fan," Kilmartin said. "They started tussling around for a few minutes. At one point, another fan walked over. He punched him ... and the man just went out. It was pretty hard to watch."

Witnesses say there were some verbal confrontations between two groups of fans last night.

"I just don’t understand why people have to go to that extreme," Lisa Mooney said. "Why can’t it just be fun? That's all it's supposed to be, a fun family event."

Lisa said her husband had no known medical condition that she knew about.

"It takes a lot to get him mad," Lisa Mooney said. "He has the patience of a saint. I don’t know what happened."

Meh.

Finding out was completely avoidable if he hadn't fricked around.

Sounds like he caught a punch right in the temple.

I don’t understand why so many people go to NFL games looking to start fights these days.

So killing someone with a cheap shot is justified because the victim grabbed another person?

NFL fans are such trash. They probably got in an argument about the game being rigged.

Yea, unless there's a different video, I have no clue what happened. I did read that the blow was from hitting the ground, not being punched.

By no means was I going around looking for fights in my younger days, but nowadays(meaning since I had kids 12 years ago) I will go all the way out of my way to avoid confrontation. Granted, I do a good job of it so it's never been a thing, but I could give 2 shits if someone thinks I'm scared or whatever, but I'm just walking away or honestly, doing what I need to do to ensure I never even have a confrontation. Or another way to put it, just acting like an adult lol.

shite just aint' worth it.

Its amazing what NFL games bring out in some people. Fighting, drinking in excess and just in general degenerate behavior.

I went to a Patriots/Saints game once in Foxboro and was hanging with a friend from Boston's tailgate and there was this guy in his late 60's shooting hard liquor excessively, throwing up constantly and ended up getting thrown out the game for smoking. I ask my friend what he does for a living and my friend informs me he is a orthopedic surgeon. And goes on to say "he likes to let loose at Pats games".

I posted this in the OT thread. Adults wearing team jerseys all live in trailer parks.

The OT thread said something about he had a heart attack during the confrontation. Not sure if that's true.

The report in the OP link did say he had a medication episode either on the way or at the hospital, so it insinuates something along those lines.

I have seen no video—everything I know about this incident I read in the OP. And I am certainly not victim blaming. Nor do I have enough info to call the supposed punch a cheap shot. But even if it were, 1) I doubt alleged cheap-shotter intended to kill the victim or even thought it possible, and 2) when there is alcohol involved (I’d be astonished if there wasn’t by all participants), and you’re a grown man who puts his hands on another grown man, you should be prepared for some fisticuffs, no matter how obnoxious and “deserving” of it the other man may have been.

And even if the puncher wasn’t the original man he grabbed. If he’s been going to games in Boston for 30 years, surely he’s seen plenty of these confrontations and how quickly they can get out of hand. Who cares if you’re “in the right” if you’re wearing an arse beating at the end of it? Or sadly, in this case, dead. Almost all of us have been in situations at big games where some lubed up assholes have continued to cross the line and deserved a beat down. But too much can go too wrong way too fast. Nothing good can come from it.

Again, not blaming the victim. Prayers for him and his family, and I hope if laws were broken, the culprit(s) is found and appropriately prosecuted. Just saying it ain’t worth it.

I’ve been saying this…NFL stadiums need to designate certain sections in the stadium for opposing teams. I absolutely hate going to NFL games where fans are mixed in together. At least College tries to do this. Will it fix everything…no…but it’s at least worth a shot. Fights are becoming more and more and more frequent…and deadly!! Something has to be done…starting with attempting to separate as many opposing fans as possible. Just my two cents…

It seems to be more prevalent in the NFL than in college...at least in my experience...which is admittedly very limited.

When I first started going to LSU games in the late 80's/early 90's you could almost guarantee a fight would break out at some point every game. Like clockwork, everyone in our second would randomly stand up and all start looking at the same place in the stands. Now, I don't think I've seen a fight in the stadium in 10 years (other than maybe a little bit of verbal arguing).

Likewise, I don't think I've ever seen a fight at a Saints game (though I sure some happen). In fact, those games are probably some of the best examples of people of different races happily getting along.
