Player with the ball gets trapped in a bad position...call a timeout.

Can't get the ball in within 5 seconds...call a timeout.

Can't get across halfcourt in the allotted time...call a timeout.

The only sport where defenses can be penalized by teams getting multiple mulligans per game.

I hate bailout timeouts in football too to avoid delay of game penalties (rule should be no timeouts with <10 seconds on play clock) but at least timeouts are precious in football.

The basketball rules are like a quarterback being able to call a timeout in the endzone to avoid being sacked for a safety.

The basketball rule should be no timeouts can be called while the clock is running or the ref has started an inbounds count.

You think the defense is being penalized when they are able to force an opponent to waste a timeout?

I don't know what to tell you if you don't understand why they aren't just as important to have in basketball.

Checking in to preemptively bitch about the college basketball officials in the tournament calling every minor contact a foul

Happens all the time at the end of games. Teams can't get the ball in or get trapped and are let off the hook.

For example, there was a playoff game last year, Raptors against Sixers, where the Raptors trapped Embiid with a few seconds left. That should have ended the game with a Raptors win but Embiid called a timeout and then hit a 3 to win on the inbounds play.

I don't see how this is any different than a football team being able to call a time out before the play clock expires.

Because it's essentially game play with the defense actively trying to stifle the play.

As I said, I'd like to see delay of game bailout timeouts in football removed too by not allowing timeouts with less than 10 seconds on the play clock. Aaron Rodgers probably would have had an extra loss or two a year under that rule.

sounds like Embiid was pretty headsup there.

Agreed, I've always thought the same as well.

I prefer the strategic "bailout timeouts" to the new fad of narcissist coaches calling a timeout after their team makes a big shot to have announcers gloat about them on TV or "set-up their defense".

The dumbasses are just giving the opposing team a break to set-up their next play.

Why are you comparing two timeouts of completely different sports? In a 60 minute football game, there's about 15 minutes of action. In a 40 minute college basketball game, there's 40 minutes of action. Each team has four timeouts to use compared to six in a football game. To me, it looks like timeouts are more valuable in basketball. If a team has to burn one to avoid a five second count or not lose possession, that takes away an opportunity to set up a play or avoid a turnover later in the game.

You shouldn’t be able to call TOs with a ball in play.

Well they don't have unlimited timeouts, so there's that

None of ur examples are even the worst of the bail outs.

Worst is guy has ball, jumps out of bounds, as in air, he calls for time out and gets it.

How is this any different than a defense calling a timeout after seeing how the offense lines up on a big play in football?

You had to have been absolutely TORQUED when Chris Webber fired a TO that Michigan didn't have against UNC in the early 90's.

But yea, this is a bad take. Those timeouts are a great part of the game, and are the reward for keeping a few in hand for the moments you know you'll need them.

As productive as offenses have become I’d say teams should rethink calling a timeout in these circumstances and just eat the 5 yards

College basketball for men has enough media timeouts built into each half.

Under 16,12,8,4 minutes. Of course it’s possible to have continuous play that exceeds a4 minute window, it’s highly rare.
