Am I correct that indecision or hesitation by ump cost lead runner an extra base, or even two? Playback shows one ump clearly indicating safe sign to the other ump, shaking his head.

Don’t matter now but insurance run would have been lovely.

Absolutely cost lead runner an extra base. He was flying.

Edit: rewatching the game rn because I can't sleep, Thompson wasn't flying but if the call would've been clear, could've gone 3 easily. Lucky for us it didn't matter in the end.

I believe that's why Johnson was out having a discussion with the umpires.

I was wondering why Jay was birthing kittens. Definitely should have gotten an insurance run there but Guidry made it moot.

No. Thompson wasn’t advancing to third either way. He was halfway and did good to make it to 2nd.

Yes, wasn’t a chance in hell of it happening but the umps should have placed the runners on second and third.

Thompson played that really well.

1. He was way past half way

2. He didn’t do good just making it to 2nd, he walks into 3rd if the ump doesn’t confuse him. He was almost on top of 2nd when the OF touched it.

Really good baserunning that the ump messed up.

That was what Jay was arguing. Thompson should’ve gotten third at least.

Thanks for this thread. I couldn't figure out why Jay was having that discussion with the ump.

That screenshot doesn’t tell the whole story though. After the center fielder dove, Thompson started to run back to first. Everyone thought he caught it until it rolled out of his glove on the ground.

When the centerfield picks it up and throws it in, Jt had just reached second safely.

Zero chance he would have gone to third

Yes Thompson would have gotten to third if it wasn't for that shitty confusion from the ump.

I don't understand why the third base ump is so quick to make a call (and overrule) the second base ump when the second base ump is much closer to the play. These umps have been struggling.

Nah, he was at or near second which is a neutral position. He can take third if the ball is dropped, or go back to first just as easily if it is caught. The ump was signaling out, so he ran back.

JJ wasn't arguing for Thompson to be awarded 3rd. Thompson had to check up because of the close play. JJ was arguing that he shouldn't be charged with a challenge. The closest ump made a "safe" call, while it was the 3rd bas ump who called it an out. The ump closest to the play should be the call. JJ was arguing that the call on the field should be "safe", and OSU should have to challenge, not us.

No, it didn’t. Thompson could not round second because he thought it was a catch. The ump also wasn’t sure.

This is correct. There was no argument over getting 3rd base. Thompson was playing it safe to see if the catch was made or not which was the correct thing to do. The umps wouldn't review the play on their own so Jay had to use one of his challenges to do it which is insane especially since two umps made different calls.
