My guess: If the SEC is moving on ANYTHING, then they've already had talks to renegotiate the tv deals.

they better

adding 2 teams means adding $34-35M/year to the deals b/w ESPN and CBS just to BREAK EVEN

I assume that the four North Carolina schools and Maryland are solid, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if the "football" schools look around.

There's been a rumor of Maryland to the Big Ten instead of Rutgers. The Terps would bolt in a second. They aren't solid at all if the Big 10 comes calling, especially if VT bolts to the SEC and the ACC looks at all shaky.

The word is that the Pac 16 deal with Fox will net each team upwards of $23 mil (same as Big 11 shares were last year). So SEC deal needs to be renegged to this level.

i'm worried ESPN may just tell us to frick off and sign the pac16 then. it makes as much sense

is ESPN going to jump the deal $40M/year?

Have no contact in front of me, but is renegotiating the tv deal going to void it to?

Just because SEC goes to ESPN and says hey we would like more money, doesn't mean the ESPN gets to automatically say "you want more money? frick it contract void"

It is in the contract that if new markets are added the teams can renegotiate the contracts.

VT is a real prize if they are in the SEC.

are they even that popular?

VT gets pretty shitty ratings in national/BCS games

then we frick ourselves by splitting the pie up 2 more ways, making less money for each school in the process and putting the SEC further behind the big10 and pac16 financially

Not to mention no fans at the conference championship games.

In that case, I wonder what happens to Duke and UNC. Nothing special when it comes to football (although UNC has gotten a little better recently), but they are by far the two most recognizable and popular teams in the country for basketball.

Along with Kansas and Kentucky, they are probably the only four schools that are attractive despite mediocre football.

Not like I've seen the contract, but I figured that's the case. Which would be against the assumption that if we added teams we'd have to split the same amount of money. Therefore, adding teams isn't necessarily a bad thing financially.

In DC? Yes. We're not talking national ratings, as the SEC brand sells the country, we're talking about locally. And VT can deliver DC. They'll get better ratings playing Bama than BC.

that may be a valid consequence I agree, I just don't think your doomsday scenario of ESPN throwing away the SEC in favor of the Pac-16 is realistic.

Yep. ESPN and CBS have to be in the discussions way before SEC can expand. And I'm sure some execs have ideas on who they'd like to join the SEC.

vt brings a big state with them and get a lot of attention in dc supposedly. their fans travel well and they play solid football. not a lot of better options out there at this point imo.

Adding big new markets would increase the pie. Adding crappy markets not so much.

This would be good. With the SEC TV contract being one that doesn't depend on markets as much as the BTNW, the thing I would look at is the schools themselves. All 4 of those schools are equal to or an upgrade over half of the schools currently in the SEC in the big 3 sports overall.

I think DC is in the top 10 of TV markets. Thats why VT makes sense.
