good point
and also, as i stated yesterday, if FSU comes to the SEC we lock up the entire state of florida. having lived in florida for 10 years, UM only has about 5% of the state. the other 95% are UF/FSU. no one in the state gives a shite about miami

I think DC is in the top 10 of TV markets. Thats why VT makes sense.
if people in DC don't watch college football, this doesn't really matter

Not necessarily true. I think this was what that closed door meeting was about today. The state government didn't want Texas to leave A&M in a dysfunctional Big XII. But if A&M gets in the SEC, then Texas to the PAC-42 isn't a big deal.

they can offer 3 games every saturday night covering 3 separate time zones

You're trying to hard on this one, my man.

they still suffer the same problem you mentioned for DC.
If no one watches who cares?

VT is not a national program and doesn't bring much, if anything, academically
TAMU brings solid academics and a huge fanbase/endowment
the markets TAMU brings are markets who watch football, so i'll give you that too
but we have to ensure we have MAJOR increases in the ESPN/CBS deals before making any expansion talk or we risk fricking ourselves
VT/TAMU, regional programs with almost no national following and a mediocre football existence are not worth that

their markets > 1 market
odds are the pac10 goes the cable route, where they force the channel on millions of non-CFB fans

Agreed.

which increases the pressure on ESPN/CBS to pony up more to lock up teams

no it doesn't
why would ESPN care?
ESPN and ESPN are on basic cable
the pac16 network and the big10 networks are on sports tiers
ESPN has us locked up

It's going to be FOX.
They've been waiting for an opportunity to get back into major coverage of college football since being awarded the BCS.
FOX will nationally televise three Pac-42 games a weekend, ABC will hang on to the Big North-32, and CBS and ESPN will have the SEC.
The interesting thing will be how Disney handles the ABC v. ESPN dynamic.

Texas to the PAC 10 does not make much sense. The whole idea favors the current PAC 10 schools except Arizona and Arizona State. So USC just has to beat out Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State, CAL, Stanford and UCLA and if they play three non-conference games they would only play two schools from basically the Big 12 at most. Then the PAC 10 still does not want a title game. So they would not have to play the big football schools for the PAC 10 title. Then they want two BCS bids which could make it is an undefeated Texas versus an undefeated USC because neither plays each other in the conference? That makes no sense for college football. It would actually knock the BCS system down a peg and I did not think that was possible.

both are 2nd tier nationally followed programs, imo.

quote:You're just talking out of your arse now. VT is one of the most respected engineering schools in the country. Particularly in the northeast. It's probably the northern most ag school and it has a great reputation. (NOTE: I don't want to get in the pissing contest over which engineering school is best -- I don't care -- but to say VT doesn't bring anything academically is just painfully false)
VT is not a national program and doesn't bring much, if anything, academically
And OF COURSE schools are regional brands. If you care about brininging in markets, you care about its regional appeal. the national appeal is from the SEC brand.

Probably, but this realignment will definitely bring it to the forefront of meeting of Disney's executive board.

all of my UVA friends completely rag on VTs academics like they're UT and VT is LSU

i don't know how much national appeal we have. we just have a lot of diehards regionally
and why frick up whatever our appeal is?

Mizzou having St. Louis and KC is probably a better grab than VT financially. Maybe even better than FSU.
I agree with this. FSU adds no new significant market.
