A lot of ways you can interpret that. Frankly, I think they mean "We don't want another Tom Herman situation."
Kiffin's goal is to be a HC again, sure. But he sure as hell doesn't want to do it just at Houston.

Al Davis told everyone years ago that Kiffin was trouble and no one wants to listen.
Kiffin is trouble everyone should stay away.

You don't come out and say that shite in public that's bush league bullshite
Agreed but that sounds like someone who wasn't happy with how things played out. Later he said the rumor about him being close to a deal was leaked by his agent.
It must be exhausting to deal with Sexton and know what he and his clients true intentions are.

Why do you want someone that would only take the job as his last option?

The negotiations didn't go as Fertitta planned, so now he's going to run down Kiffin in the press. Bitch move.
Kiffin is better off without them if that's how they operate.

There was nothing "we" about that statement. I, I, I.
Kiffin will be a helluva lot better off not having to kiss this idiot's arse.

Cabbage heads with an IQ of 70 usually give zero fricks what anyone else thinks about them, either.

Kiffin has a track record of trouble. I would believe Fertitta over Kiffin.

It's not just about enrollment numbers and money of the boosters.
Maybe not, but that is one big part.
Hell, I would rather have Houston than Mizzou, tbh. Although I could live with neither being in the SEC quite well.
And honestly, Kiffin as an HC is much more worrying than as an OC. OC you could feel pretty safe with the hire I think, but as a HC, he has not exactly been a model employee. Talked trash (rightfully or not) about one organization as he left... left another in a midnight move.
Nothing about him screams this is an HC I can trust. But as an OC, I think he could do really well at LSU.

Read into it what you want but I believe Kiffins wants to redeem himself as a HC now after what it did for his reputation when he abruptly left Tennessee to go to USC.
That along with some recruiting mistakes, that left scars on the Vol program, I think he will shine with the right opportunity, as will CEO.
The idea of not wanting to hire a very good coach because of prior mistakes or failures is simply ludicrous IMO.
With that said, Applewhite was the best fit when Herman left for Texas, and CEO was the best fit when Herman and Jimbo had no interest to come to LSU.

It would have been hard for me to say no to Applewhite with that sterling resume'
Alabama-fired after one season
Texas-fired (by his alma mater no less)
Houston- meh, had a 9-3 season playing in the All American Conference.
How could you say no to this guy?
This is what I was talking about with the Boards of trustees and their ego's and information that gets out.
A B'ham sportswriter told me this. When Saban was being "courted" by Texas the sportswriter went to a Texas Board member and asked. The board member says HE IS OUR NEXT COACH. The sportswriter asked if he could speak with another member of the Board and got blew off by this guy. The sportswriter did speak to 3 more Board members, that same day, and they said Saban was not a candidate and the first Board member "didn't know what he was talking about". These guys have BIG egos and believe that what THEY say is how it will go.

met that guy twice... once years ago with my GF at the Landrys christmas party at the aquarium and once last week at our facility, he's about to build an open eatery area at our fields... i wanted to ask how their hiring was going but he basically looked like he's been asked a million times... i didn't bother... that guy has more money than jesus and he was worried about snuff in his teeth so his wife wouldn't find out.. lol..

I read it as Fertitta's arrogance didn't respond well to Kiffin's arrogance
