Only 1 of the two things is bad.

Pelini at Nebraska. Had them as a 9-10 win team every year.
Been Seeing Penn St fans calling for Franklin to get canned on socials.
Would be a massive mistake. With Harbaugh out, they essentially have a free ride to the playoffs every year

Winningest coach in MAC history

It’s not a high profile place, and I don’t follow their program that closely to know if there were off the field issues at play, but I have always scratched my head about USM stepping away from Jeff Bower. His record was solid.

Skip Holtz won 5 bowl games in a row at LA Tech. Idk if Cumbie has won 5 games in his tenure.

Not actually fired but WVU did run Bobby Bowden off to FSU.

Geoff Collins was more responsible for those SEC East titles
Seeing Geoff Collins responsible for a good thing is weird.

quote:He wasn't the long term answer, but as you said, he won the east twice. Should have gotten 2018 to be his make or break year, so then Florida would have never hired Mullen which really killed that program, but I think the fake death threats comment did him in.
McElwein by Florida? Didn't he win the east two of his three years at UF? I guess shark humping is where they draw the line.

He’s the biggest reason why we suck so much arse now.
4 years later and yall still are saying that bullshite. Dude left plenty of talent. His replacement run all the talent off and did not bring any in.
Nothing that is going on at Auburn right now is Gus's fault. Its all on Auburn, Harsin and the slimy fricker coaching right now

They had delusions of grander as well as constantly looking north. Even though USM was winning more consistently under Bower they were always 3rd in the state for attention and money. In Hattiesburg there were a lot of Ole Miss grads with money due to large medical community (State had some as well), so they had to fight that in their own city. I think some fans did the USL envy of big brother(s) thing with Bama becoming their favorite team.
The powers that be seemed to think Winning seasons and bowl games were no longer enough. They thought USM should be doing more than 7 wins a season with 8 and 9 win season mixed in every so often, and they thought that was Bower’s ceiling and was keeping them from taking next step.
Fedora didn’t do much better but was flashier and younger with a more wide open offense. He then had one really good season and parlayed that into the NC job. USM went winless the next season with replacement - Ellis Johnson. Monken was then hired and took 3 seasons to have a winning season, and he then immediately left to be an OC in the NFL. Hopson just quit after 1 game into the covid season. Now they will be looking for another HC after firing theirs.
Bower would not have left or quit. I want to say his daughter was killed in car wreck between Hattiesburg and Petal, and I don’t think he wanted to leave the area.

Not a head coach firing, but Maryland fired one of Bear Bryant's top assistants without his knowledge. As a result, Bryant resigned and left for Kentucky. This after he coached the Terrapins to a 6-2-1 season in his first ever year as a head coach.

We managed to do it twice.
Solich and a few years later Pelini.
The football gods are exacting their toll.
Hopefully our penance is paid off someday soon. It’s been a grind.
