The UAB athletic department is a financial drain right now. Throwing money at it by building a stadium would be a poor decision at this point. They need to at least put together a product casual observers would go see (such as myself). Every year I say I'd love to go to a UAB game and every year they drop their first game to Troy (a team they should be able to beat) and make it something not even worth mentioning again. This season they lost to So. Miss. AT HOME for crying out loud...
The basketball games are fun and that program deserves the upgrades it has received.

Legion Field is in a "bad neighborhood" but it is a perfectly serviceable field to play games on. UAB doesn't even fill up half the stadium so it's not like they really "need" a new facility. Personally, I hear more horror stories about downtown Birmingham than I do about the area around Legion Field but that doesn't stop anyone from going down there.
If you were arguing for a new practice field maybe I would agree with you but they don't need a new gameday facility.

I don't think McGee's "rep" as an OC has taken a hit. UAB's offense has done fine and he would likely still be considered a good OC even if he never has a winning season at UAB because the offense hasn't been the problem.
He has to prove himself as a head coach before he builds a rep as a head coach. It shouldn't be difficult to put together a winning season in C-USA even if they are just using Birmingham-area talent.

I think kicking a kid off the team b/c the offense relies too much on his ability pretty much proves he isn't cut out to be a head coach.

Terrible coach and hire.Granted the Univ of Ala board is mostly Gumps who do all they can to screw UAB,especially in athletics.
They really need to go for a name,even if the name has been fired lately, or consider shutting that football program down. McGee is shockingly as uninspiring as Neil Calloway which is amazing. For the Rice game two Thursdays ago, they had an "announced" crowd of 6,000. Think how many were probably there 2,000?

You should read the thread before posting. You would have learned that his hiring was completely based off UAB's in-house coaching search. He was the only candidate UAB presented to the board.

UAB also had a plan to finance the new stadium, and UAT Board said no.

No they didn't. The plan they presented said they could pay for it IF they sold out the boxes/suites each year and IF they averaged over 18,000 a game in sold tickets.

UAB football is not going to sell many tickets even with a destination playing field.
It isn't a good product. IF you are willing to toss tens of millions, perhaps a
hundred million on a new stadium to hope that it gets better.
Its not an investment, its throwing money at the problem.

every year for an often humiliating product.

If those millions were turned to basketball
UAB would be a player again.

They had commitments to sell them for five years. What happens after those five years? What happens if those companies can no longer afford to pay for them a year or two down the road?

I don't know who Ashville is. But ODU and Charlotte had to add football to get into CUSA
