Why doesn't UAB fire Garrick McGee?

The guy has done a horrible job. He kicked the leading receiver, Jackie Williams, off the team before the season with no explanation. He later confessed that he did it because he thought the team depended too much on Jackie for their offense. He also chose to go on defense at the beginning of each half during a game earlier this year, stating it was because he had faith in UAB's strong defense. Stupid move even if UAB would have had a good defense, but even a dumber move for a team that allowed 6 teams to score more that 50 points on them. Even winless Southern Miss managed to beat UAB 62-27.

UAB is UAB bro. Garrick sucks, but if you can find a coach that the UA BoT will approve that can win 6 a year at that shite hole then you've found a hell of a football coach.

I thought Garrick was a decent hire, but I was obviously horribly wrong. UAB took forever to fire Callaway and he blew as badly. Garrick will get another year or two or three to flounder around and then UAB will hire some other putz with no chance.

Funny thing is if Garrick hadn't been dumb enough to take the job to begin with he would have probably been interim Captain of tFlagship instead of Pappy Johnelle after Bobby's firing.

The team has made some positive strides under McGee. It will just take time to undo the Calloway years.

Would agree the football program is crap, but it is a great University.

I was referring to just the football program. Definitely a great university to be clear.

The UA system BOT absolutely refuses to do anything for the program. No money, no stadium, no resources. And yet they won't admit the whole thing was a bad idea and do away with the program.

UAB football is stuck in a constant state of suck and it ain't gonna change because UA doesn't care to see it change.

dude is in year 2 at a program with some of the worst facilities/resources in america. calloway left that program in shambles.

honestly though they need to drop football and focus all their resources on basketball. i remember when mike anderson had that program going on all cylinders in the 2000's. looks like jerod haase has got it going again too.

That's not the complete story but it's not far from it. My issue with the situation was he did it so late in the off-season there wasn't anyway the kid could have transferred and played somewhere else.

Paul Bryant Jr. and his buddies really have us over a barrel.

The argument, and it's a good one I suppose, is that without football, basketball would be dropped to an even shittier conference than the Neo-Sun Belt that CUSA has become. But, the football program has so much going against it, I don't know that it would be successful if Nick Saban was coaching.

As for McGee, he at least gets the right to sacrifice staff members. Watson Brown and Callaway got that much at least. Whether or not it matters, I dunno. Probably not.

McGee explanation

I couldn't find the article where he stated it was due to the team depending on Williams too much, but here is an interview where he admits there was no wrong doing. Williams claims he was never given an explanation.

UAB hired McGee through a coach search with very little involvement from the ua bot. Sure the board had to approve the selection but the committee who interviewed the candidates and brought McGee up for a vote was all UAB. I remember Auburn fans posing as UAB fans claiming the only reason McGee was hired was Petrino came out and endorsed him publicly for the job. They thought it was a huge victory over the "evil UAT board of directors." I'm sure there will be people claiming his hiring was all the board's fault if he continues to have sub-par seasons. It's just the way it goes when you talk about UAB football.

Personally I would love uab to have a decent football program. It would be great for Birmingham if they had a team decent enough to draw large enough crowds to warrant a new stadium. I'm not paying money to watch a 3-8 team play at legion field though. I'd consider going if they were a 7-5 or 6-6 team though.

A friend of mine told me that McGee asked him and the guys he was tailgating with for a beer before the UAB/Troy game this year. He said he should have known then it was going to be a long year

He would probably be the actual HC at Arkansas if he hadn't left. He was loved here and a huge part of the offense and QB development over the course of the Petrino years. He definitely caught a bad break by taking off months before the Petrino disaster.

Yeah, after torpedoing a perfectly reasonable stadium plan.

From what I read, Petrino's publicly congratulating McGee on getting the job before it was officially announced was specifically to head off BoT interference.

I'm telling you. A lot of "die hard" UAB fans are either nuts or Auburn fans who believe everything from Tuscaloosa is evil. It's pretty amazing.
