UAB football became irrelevant the day the BOT turned down the opportunity to hire Jimbo Fisher away from LSU and instead went with Neal Calloway.
I remember them having one really good season about 10 years ago, and even then the fans couldn't halfway fill Legion Field. If UAB is anything, it's a basketball school. Not enough support to be successful at football.

They could have a good program. A ~40k stadium is needed. Also, I've always thought the UAB coach should pull from the local talent (Hoover, Vestavia, etc.), and try to make it a "local" team.

He would've gotten the interim job instead of JLS, but the results in '12 still wouldn't have been very good.
I'm glad it worked out the way it did. It was painfully clear last year that Petrino was what made the offense tick, and that you can't replicate the results of a Bobby Petrino offense without Bobby Petrino. If we'd promoted someone like McGee and he'd led us to something like 7 or 8 wins, we'd have been forced to give him to job instead of doing a legitimate coaching search and ending up with Bielema.

Probably because UAB football shouldn't exist, and has such existential issues of funding and viability that it has the worst facilities in D1-A football.

This is still an urban legend. IF Jimbo was willing to walk into the rat tank of UAB football I would reconsider any ideas of Jimbo being intelligent.
I still think Jimbo wanted a raise and the BOT bought into the agent's tale.

Same here. I have two degrees from Troy, as well as my wife and her brother having a degree from Troy, but living here in Birmingham I'd go catch a game from time to time if they were decent. My Dad went to UAB back before they had a team, so most of my family are Alabama fans. I still pull for Alabama, but Troy is my number one. But I would like to see the local team do well.

Were the stadium plans and the JF talks at the same time? I could have seen him going there, coaching a season or two after the new stadium is complete, then moving on.

The stadium was after JF, before GMG, IIRC.
Jimbo was coming. whether or not he would have stayed very long, who knows. Doubtful. But the job was his.

Because the UAT board wont' let them. Remember, they wouldn't let them hire Jimbo Fisher. No school is totally screwed by its own board as UAB is.

If Jimbo Fisher was seriously going to take the UAB HC job over the FSU OC/Coach in Waiting job and the BOT is what kept it from happening then Jimbo needs to send them a thank you gift every day for the rest of his life.

At some point money has to be spent. Jacksonville State and Alabama State have all gotten new stadiums within the last 5 years or so. I believe UAB is the only school in the state that does not have an on campus stadium. Have there even been upgrades to Bartow within the last 10 years?
The school should invest in a nice multi-purpose facility for athletics along with a stadium. Telling a coach to build a CFB program from Legion Field in this day and age is setting him up for failure.
Honestly, if I was McGee I would get out while I can, take an OC position, rebuild my rep, and wait for a job at a school that gives a frick about football

USA plays off campus.
Bartow has had the standard upgrades over the past couple of years (new floor, score/videoboards, etc.)

come on now
why would you think a school with basically no winning tradition would suddenly be able to fill a 70k stadium in the one year they were halfway decent?

Completely disagree.
UAB was doing just fine with playing schools like DePaul, USF, and VCU.
