Why did O get 3.5 million a year?

A commodity nobody else wanted as head coach.
His deal should have been for $1 more than Aranda.

Well, he's now the lowest paid HC in the SEC by about 700k if that means anything.

I wonder if a school will ever pay a coordinator more than a head coach because I think in some situations, it is warranted. Aranda is clearly more important to the success of LSU football than Orgeron.

I think you have to do the five year deal for the sake of stability. Otherwise, the OC candidates will question the validity of the hire. And then there would be the negative recruiting. The only reason to do lesser deal is to make it easy to make another change; OC candidates and recruits would see right through it.

Because that is the bare minimum you will be paid as the coach of LSU. If they paid him less than that it would look like he doesn't have the support of the administration and he needs that to recruit. We can complain about coaching salaries in general but O's salary is perfectly reasonable given the situation.
