Last I heard it was $86M - still a lot of money - but does it have to be paid all at once upon termination, or can it be arbitrated over several years? I'm not sure if that level of detail of his contract is public, but it is a public university...
And replace him with who?
It's not just paying Jimbo, it's paying a new coach. If you want a name coach, then he isn't going to come at a discount. So you're going to tie up potentially $150m in two coaches?

FTX was their major donor.

I'd almost rather eat it and hire a young up and coming coach on the cheap if he keeps it up another season.
this 100%
It makes far more financial sense to move on now.
Cut bait now we only pay out to Jimbo and current staff. Cut bait later we're going to add several more expensive coordinator deals on top of Jimbo's insane deal. Either way he's clearly not the guy and will be gone before the end of his contract. May as well spend less to drop him now.

Sonny Dykes
Mike Elko
Hugh Freeze
Lane Kiffin
Dave Clawson
Chip Kelly
Luke Fickell
Mike Houston
Gus Malzahn
Jeff Traylor
David Aranda
Mike Campbell
Lance Leipold
Kris Klieman
PJ Fleck
Jamey Chadwell
Here are some guys who would be expensive and some who would be not so expensive. Throw a dart and whoever it hits will do.

They could offer the next coach a 5 year $5 million contract so they really aren’t spending much more

Dykes would be an improvement day 1 and would take the job for 4-5 million.

Already makes at least that and probably more. Also would get more money from TCU after this year.

It would probably cost Texas 4&8 about $200,000,000. You have to account for Jimbo’s contract, plus all of the assistants, and then pay for the new hc and his staff. No way they’re footing that bill. I don’t care how freaking rich they are.

May as well go after Brady as well...

I wouldn't personally want to compete with Auburn for a coach. Next year is the year he's done. Save 10 million and be the best job next season.

Finebaum kinda summed it up perfectly.. They can't afford to fire him, but they also can't afford to not fire him.

Question for anyone in the know – does Jimbo have one of those rollover contracts that adds another year after each year he’s the coach so that no matter when they fire him they’ll still have a $90 million buyout?
I know Jimmy Sexton was pretty famous for this a few years back.

Why do schools keep doing this to themselves? Just do a higher per year to year contract or 3 year max contract. College football has gotten ridiculous all the way around.

Is it expensive to fire him? Yep.
What’s the upside of keeping him? If his “best ever” class has half of it left I’ll be surprised. Every recruit is going to know “not if but when” he’ll get fired.
Pain now, pain later. Cough up the dough, open a vein and let it bleed for a while.
Then hire Matt Rhule before someone else does.

A&M panicked after LSU fired Orgeron and Woodward threw out that Jimbo smokescreen.
A&M extended Jimbo by 4 years at that time and gave him that ridiculous buyout.

A big part of it is recruiting. If you don't have a coach locked in for a minimum of 5 years, other programs can negatively recruit a kid by telling them "Hey, you don't want to go to X, that coach is only under contract for another two years. Come here to Y and you know who your coach will be the entire time you are here."

That is a myth created by agents.

I've spent entirely too much time pondering this...
Can you imagine being so bad at coaching someone is willing to pay you $80+ million to go away? If that happens, do you feel at all guilty in being paid that kind of money for literally not doing your job? Do you agree to some sort of lesser amount (as an olive branch per say) in an effort to stay for another year or two?
Obviously, the average person would say take the money and run, but the average person doesn't have an ego to match a $100m contract.
