He got a contract extension last year through the 2025 season.

2021: $8.05 million
2022: $7.565 million
2023: $8.275 million
2024: $7.585 million
2025: $7.585 million

Termination Buyout after 2021 season $25,188,000

an open records request by the Tulsa World discovered that Riley has a $4.6 million buyout if he leaves OU for any job, including the NFL, after the 2019 season. The buyout drops by $1 million every year thereafter until March 16, 2022, when OU will waive the buyout.

This language is from his 2019 contract that was extended 2 more seasons in 2019. You'd have to assume the buyout was amended to a higher number over a longer period. Not proving easy to find though.

That's good info. It won't be Riley if that is the case.

I believe that's the buyout if he's fired without cause. Those numbers aren't always the same.

The league is in the midst of a 13-year deal with ESPN and Fox that ends in 2025, and reports earlier this year said the networks were not interested in early renegotiations. That is one of the reasons Oklahoma and Texas are leaving the league. The current deal pays the 10-school league about $200 million annually.

quote:

ESPN will be the exclusive home of SEC football and men’s basketball starting in 2024. The 10-year contract reportedly will be worth more than $300 million annually for the league; that is on top of the current deal with ESPN (that one also ends in 2034) that includes the televising of certain football and basketball games and the SEC Network. Consider that the current deal with CBS is worth $55 million a year. And consider that SEC expansion almost certainly will lead to a re-opening of negotiations. (Under that new ESPN deal, the 14 member schools would’ve expected to receive about $40 million a year solely from the league’s TV deal. In the 2018-19 fiscal year, each SEC school received about $44 million total from the SEC’s entire revenue distribution system.)

This isn't that big of a deal anymore.

LSU can probably get it negotiated down to 25 million though.

Why would he even come here when Oklahoma will be in the SEC soon? It won’t be Riley

That’s what OU would have to pay him

His buyout to leave is like $4 million IIRC

That’s if the school fires him without cause

That’s not his buyout if he leaves for another job

Not sure if this is accurate.

The same website lists Jimbo at $95m but we know he can leave for $0.

I think this is just saying if OU wants to can him then they owe him his whole contract. Not necessarily if he leaves for another job.

I don't know if it will be Lincoln or not, But what amazes me is some of yall have no idea what a buyout clause is or how it works.

The buyout number if he’s fired vs if he chooses to leave are two different things. If he leaves the number is a mere 4.5 mill I believe.

Whew, for a second there, their dogs Boomer and Sooner were sweating out their possible name changes to Bayou and Bengal.

That is the school buyout. I don't see a coaches buyout, just "stay bonuses".

Never seemed like a realistic option to me anyway. What's the draw for Riley? He's already among the top 3 or 4 highest paid coaches in the country. Oklahoma would match whatever LSU offered. He's already getting into the playoff there and Oklahoma is headed into the SEC. It's entirely lateral.

Keep dreaming.

dude before you tell people to keep dreaming (i still dont think Riley would ever come here) you might want to understand how buyouts work.

what you listed is that the school owes him if he is fired. If he leaves on his own for another school or NFL he owes 4.6 million.

His 2019 contract says his buyout to terminate his contract voluntarily is 22.5% of the remaining compensation left. He did re-up in 2020 though but I can't find that contract online. That said, at the 2019 rate, it'd be just under $7,000,000.00 to buy him out.
