What a world that Lane Kiffin is the top candidate.

As a diehard LSU fan, I honestly don’t want Lane Kiffin to be the coach. He’s a corn ball, immature, and has never had any real success (we’ll see how this year finishes).
But it’s just so very on brand for LSU to just throw the most money ever to some guy who is honestly a mid coach. We’ve been doing it for years for coordinators and position coaches, people unqualified and making them the highest paid at their positions (i’m looking at you Matt House).
I just don’t get it man. To play devils advocate, if you FORCED me to take someone right now, I suppose the “best” candidate is Kiffin, and that’s what I think I have a problem with.
I’d honestly rather have just let Kelly stay than hire Kiffin as one of the highest paid coaches in the country, and overhauled the staff. Do people honestly think Kiffin will be a game changer compared to Kelly? People think Kiffin is a National Champion contender? I don’t see it, so I’m out on it.
You tell me the four best guys in the nation are off the table (Cignetti, Smart, Lanning, and including Saban). Who would you honestly want next? To me none of the names are exciting enough which is why I probably would have just kept Kelly and fired everyone on the offensive staff instead.
But now what do you do? Lane Kiffin isn’t a coach capable of winning a national title. But we’re throwing all the money boosters can raise at him? Why? We weren’t winning a natty with Kelly, and we won’t win a Natty with Kiffin either and we’ll be right back in the board in another 4 years hating Kiffin too.
LSU and the governor have already F’ed this up so bad and set the program back a decade. I’ve got people coming up to me (not in LA and who don’t even follow football) ask me what’s going on and how embarrassing LSU is currently with the governor and AD disaster. It’s embarrassing and LSU is a national clown show. That’s not something a guy like Kiffin is capable of fixing

When you bring a program like Ole Miss to the top of the SEC, you get the reputation of being good, maybe great.
He’s earned it

Lol i don’t (and never did) like Kelly either.
I just don’t understand firing one of the highest paid coaches in the country incapable of winning a national championship, paying his enormous buyout, and then hiring another coach as one of the highest paid coaches in the country who is also incapable of winning a national championship…
What’s the point

There will be more stability with a guy that can lock down the offensive side of the ball. Then you’re a DC away from having a great team every year. BK is a ceo type coach that depends on his coordinators . That’s not sustainable as we should have learned with coach O. It’s why we went from great offense/terrible defense to good defense/terrible offense with Kelly. You’re always replacing coordinators and sometimes both sides of the ball will stink. Rarely will both sides of the ball be elite like 2019.
To answer the question, my choice would be Heupel. Probably better offensively than kiffin and without all the immaturity and making it all about himself. Kiffin and Deion are same level on that front.

Stopped reading here after confirming you’re an idiot.
Seriously, do some of you have the memory of a goldfish? The situation with Kelly had become untenable and there was nowhere for the program to go but down

quote:How do you know he is incapable? There are only 3 active coaches who have a natty (and one ain’t doing so hot right now). Does everyone else suck? The thinking is that he has gotten historical bottom feeder Ole Miss to a perennial 10 win/upper quarter of the SEC team, so with the resources of LSU he should do just as well if not better. Not that hard to understand why so many LSU fans want him.

He’s not necessarily the top candidate, just the top available candidate with a reasonable buyout and whatnot.

He’s earned it
At Ole Miss
Their best season in their history before he got there was a 10 win season and he’s more than averaged that in his time there. I don’t think Kiffin haters realize where OM is on the totem pole due to the success he’s had there recently. It’s an unbelievable record what he’s been able to accomplish there

historical bottom feeder
Ole Miss has had up and downs, but they are not a historical bottom feeder by any metric, especially in the recent history which matters more than the 1970s and 1980s.

They’re ahead of Vandy and probably Kentucky in historical success in a 14 team league

I was trying to remember his career arc and at what point he became toxic for a while and for why? I remember him bailing on UT and then wasn’t he left on the tarmac when he was canned at USC? Can’t remember that whole story.
I will say that he does seem to have matured a lot.

It's not a home run hire if it happens. But maybe a ground rule double.
With Kelly we were bunting every at-bat.
I also think he's immature & agree with many of your other points.
He is capable offensively though, which we are inept at currently.

I don’t think historical successes matter at all in the modern landscape, another reason i don’t want Kiffin.
In the modern college football era, if a random school wants to throw hundreds of millions of dollars around, they’re going to start winning (see texas tech). If Central Michigan had a donor come in with $10billion to spend on football - they would become a playoff team over night.
It doesn’t matter anymore that “[insert coach] won at this historically bad program” at all. Kiffin was given a ton of money at Ole Miss. They spent a bunch of money on transfer players and facilities and coaches and front office administrators.
So we can’t say “oh Lane Kiffin has turned around Ole Miss” No. Ole Miss has turned around Ole Miss. Lane is just having moderate success at a program being aggressive in the modern landscape of college football.
So is it better than Kelly? Maybe. Is it worth firing Kelly, paying his buyout, then paying Kiffin a ton of money? Probably not. We’re structurally similar to Ole Miss in the modern landscape with higher expectations. Once Kiffin doesn’t win a national title here within 5 years he’ll be hated too.
