Part of this about doing everything in their power to keep Herman even though the chances are now slim without a Big 12 invite, and part of it's about showing their next coach how serious they are about building a great program.
UH might be the top G5 job, but its biggest challenge has proven to be keeping a coach for more than a few years at a time. That's why they were said to be targeting Leach before they hired Herman. I wonder if they go for a similar kind of hire this time around--they sacrifice the super high ceiling that a young up-and-comer brings and inevitably takes with him to a P5 program, and instead settle on an older but steadier guy who'll hang around for a while and win often, but only deliver a great season (NY6 bowl) every few years.

The problem is it's still a stepping stone G5 job and as long as that's the case holding on to coaches will always be hard. Might as well try to hit home runs and worry about the replacement when the time comes.

Agreed. They wreak of desperation. I would respect UH a lot more if they weren't scrambling, unless its all a PR move to act like they'e going "to do whatever it takes".

Until UH joins a P5 conference AND to have a bigger stadium, it will be tough to keep a good young coach longer. All this means he's gone and hopefully as a new Tigers coach next year.

He's not getting 6 from any program. That would be stupid as frick to pay him that much given that the Saban is only making 7 and he has nowhere near the hardware Saban does.

I still haven't even heard from someone who claims "sources" on this board say that Herman is #1 for LSU. And if he isn't made to feel like a top priority, i don't think we have a chance. To go with the fact that F King can't seem to stfu.

Houston's board president probably has more money than all of LSU's boosters combined
Not that any of that matters because Herman isn't staying for equal money in Houston anyways but the LSU fans thinking they'll just buy him away are foolish

Booster money is all fine and dandy. And most of their pay comes from private funding anyway. We know this.
But they've had that big booster for a while and he let Art Briles go, he let Kevin Sumlin go, and he's going to let Herman go. Because at the end of the day, it just doesn't make sense to pour millions of dollars on a coach for a football program that doesn't make any money. Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, LSU, and the like make millions and millions of dollars before the boosters even have a say. It makes sense for a Texas or an LSU to have a great coach. It doesn't make much sense for Houston. LSU athletics gives millions each year to the school. Houston meanwhile, has to give their athletic department millions to make ends meet. That's the difference.

I am not worried about Houston retaining Herman. He had to rip up shitty floors at their football facility himself because nobody wanted to pay for it.
