So stop with the nonsense like Gruden or Blake Baker etc

If Woodward has the say, and I haven’t seen anything reliable saying he doesn’t…

His career is totally over if he doesn’t get this hire right. Won’t get hired at Dog Catcher U.

So it’s not going to be any of these out the box name. It’s going to be a coach that has been a HC and that has won games. That doesn’t preclude a coach at a stepping stone school. But it’s not gonna be a guy that hasn’t been one and hasn’t won games. If it’s a coordinator it’ll be one with a lot of experience at a place like Georgia, but I doubt even that.

He’s not going to take a giant risk imo.

This is the Mal Moore moment for LSU...find THE guy and camp in his front yard until he takes it. Kiffin is the only realistic THE guy out there.

he’s 62 years old

he got an extension in 2022 that pays him $1.9 million a year, plus incentives

he got a $500k bonus in 2023 and again in 2025 when the baseball team won the CWS

why do you think he’ll be sweating out getting fired in three years if this hire doesn’t work out

Well Woody clearly fricked this hire up and wouldn’t admit what it seems everyone knew. Kelly was here for Kelly and never respected the job or the University

Given what a new coach had to face in light of what happened at the end of Orgeron's term, I doubt that any coach would have done appreciably better. Cignetti being the exception at Indiana.....but it was Indiana.

A new coach whomever he was, would still have had to deal with the fact that there was a wholesale exodus of scholarship players coupled with the advent of the NIL/Portal era at the same time. I think you have to rethink what you expect a new coach does in terms of responsibilities and roles.

A new leadership structure is probably due at this time. A GM with an independent staff that takes care of the portal stuff at the very least. But the money involved right now is making the current structure almost prohibitive to maintaining the old HC as the main man.

OP, you have as much say in hiring the new coach as Scott Woodward.

Seemingly everyone knew? It was seen as a good to great hire by the overwhelming majority of college football. It just didn't work out, that happens. And he pulled the trigger quickly to make a change.

The revisionist history is embarrassing. I think we need to pull up old posts from people on this board claiming "everyone knew it was a bad hire!".

---except he got worse. I appreciate his 1st year, getting to the SEC CG, but under Kelly the Tigers have regressed.

As Pate said, Kelly never cared about the L is LSU. He only cared about to two letters: B and K.

And Saban was at LSU for Saban. What does it matter what your motivation is if you win?

As for what everyone knew, go back to 2022 and see this boards obsession with "the adults are in charge now". It was pretty unanimous that the Kelly hire was a good one.

Speaking of what everyone also seemed to know there was also a near unanimous belief that there was no way in hell we would fire Kelly after this season, much less with 4 games left and we were stuck with him thru at least 2026.

I think the word you are looking for is hindsight.

Unfortunately, LSU fans are going to have to have a reality check about what and who LSU actually is and has always been. A PRETTY good program that periodically has exceptional seasons but his results are not out of line with overall LSU history.

Historically, LSU has been a 3 - 4 loss team that once every 5 years or so has an exceptional year. It was true going back to McClendon, Stovall ran into the same problem, Arnsparger/Archer. Saban averaged 3-4 losses when he was here, Same with Miles and Orgeron. Why would Kelly be any different?

Why would we expect the new coach to be any better?
Saban follows up a NaC with a 3 loss season, Miles with a 5 loss season, Orgeron with a 5 loss season.

The idea that LSU is some sort of "blue blood" is just not bared out by history.

Skip needs to make the decision for LSU and go find the next Saban like he did before.....no big name Saban at the time.
That guy today could be Alex Golesh. Hope Skip is our guy making the call, and certainly not Woody, and he give AG a shot at elevating our program out of the doldrums we are in.

It's laughable to think that the guy responsible for the Jimbo and BK hires & contracts would be making the decision.

And Jay Johnson and Kim Mulkey. And maybe even Matt McMahon one day.

Don't gaf about Jimbo and aggy. Kelly was a genuine clusterfrick. But I'm guessing Woodward's gonna give this next hire some serious due diligence.
