Thamel: Liberty is targeting Chadwell

Sources: Liberty has targeted Coastal Carolina’s Jamey Chadwell to be the school’s next coach. There’s mutual interest, but deal is not done and Chadwell is waiting until after the Sun Belt title game to make a final decision.

Chadwell is a good coach I’m kind of surprised this is his best offer. I think he might be better than Freeze.

Maybe he’s waiting to see if Miss State opens up?

I’m interested to see how he does without Grayson McCall

Liberty has some pretty deep pockets

It is unless he gets Hugh Freeze money. Freeze had just signed an extension for more than double what Chadwell is currently making.

I heard/read he’s got some NCAA heat that’s gonna follow him around and that’s the reason why bigger programs are leery about pulling the trigger on him. But who knows.

McCall can transfer with him

Is Liberty that much better of a job than Coastal?

He’s done more than fine everywhere else he’s been.
Someday a power 5 program is going to take a chance on him and they will win big.
His comp had urban Meyer. Not saying he wins multiple titles like urban but that his profile fits urban pre Florida

Meyer had apx 15 year’s combined experience coaching at Ohio St, Colorado St and Notre Dame. He’d been a head coach at Bowling Green and Utah, and went undefeated and won a Fiesta Bowl at Utah.
I’m not sure who comped Urban Meyer, but they may want to pump the brakes. Chadwell may very well become the next Nick Saban, who knows. But his experience coaching at the P5 level, even as an assistant, is non-existent.

That’s a lateral move for Chadwell, level-wise, but they may pony up and offer him a big payday.

If I was UNLV I would be throwing some money at Chadwell.

Here's what an acquaintance of mine wrote on another board (he is a HS coach in SC and knows Chadwell very well)-
Liberty is real. Big $$ compared to CCU. Letting him bring whole staff if he chooses. Red carpet is being rolled out. Chadwell is a very religious man and the idea of working for the premier religious institution (in the SE) with a competitive football team is a big deal. He is concerned about the investigation and the 'cloud' that is hanging over the Liberty program. Also not a big fan of the AD and his shenanigans. Concerned about CUSA vs Sun Belt. Also (maybe surprisingly), not impressed with returning roster.
For Liberty, the belief is that an upstanding Christian man (who also is a damn good football coach) will be best for the image, especially going into a new conference

Isnt that a lateral move?
I thought the same thing. Hell, Coastal seems to have had a bit more success the past three seasons than Liberty, and Liberty’s rumored in some circles to be headed for CUSA.
But then I was told of the amount of money Liberty apparently has available flowing through that program. He’ll likely easily triple his current salary.
So in current program status, yes, a lateral move. In income potential, an absolute step up.

I’m sure the religious aspect is also attractive to him.

Honestly Liberty should reconsider joining CUSA. I’m guessing they were having a hard time filling the schedule, but they should have waited for something better to come up. The new CUSA is going to be a lot of travel, and poor football
