His long snapper literally had the yips and was incapable of long snapping. The only thing I could figure was that he thought the percentage of winning was better being able to kick off after a safety and putting his D on the field rather than going for it and possibly giving a very short field.

I mean...he did turn out to be right sort of

Who the hell knows? They were 11-3 last year with an experienced team returning this season.

Their ranking benefited from the upheaval of the original schedule because it actually got stronger. The original schedule had McNeese, Wyoming and Missouri OOC. The revised schedule added Iowa State currently ranked #7. The Sunbelt as a whole has gotten as boost with 3 wins against the Big 12 and Coastal beating BYU.

Yes.

They were getting votes last year even without a win against a current Top 10 team.

I saw a highlight of the play and couldn't figure out what the goal of that was. What was his explanation?

quote:

We felt like we could flip the field maybe and get 25 or 30 more yards given the time," he said. "We tried to win the game on third down, we threw the ball and tried to win the game. They had a timeout in their pocket, so we felt if we could cash it in and win the game on third down, the game would be over, so we did that.

"And then we had already made the decision that if we got to fourth and we weren't going to go for it we would take the safety."

Napier also said that punting was out of the question for Louisiana at that point. "We had had issues not only snapping the ball, but the punts weren't great," he said. "With the returner they do have, we're looking at about the same field position. If you go back, and let's just say we net 35 yards on the punt, then where do they get the ball? About the 40-yard line, 45-yard line, right? So we took the safety, and then we kicked the ball off and we burned more time, and they got the ball at about the same place.

Based on the quote I feel like he wasn’t even aware of the score because any field position advantage you gain is completely negated by the other team now only needing a FG instead of a TD

There’s also an SI piece where a bunch of anonymous coaches defended by basically being like “analytics caint account for things like the weather!!! And it worked!!” Which is even fricking dumber and the situation wasn’t even about analytics, it’s just common damn sense

Honestly in inability to admit the frick up scares me more than the frick up

Who isn't playing? UConn? New Mexico State? I think the Cajuns could survive that.

One is building a winning program in Lafayette with no losing records and likely 2 10+ win seasons

One had one 8-5 season sandwiched between two losing seasons in Ruston and had never been above TE/WR coach before getting a HC job.

3 years in Lafayette

*27-11 and still counting

3 years in Ruston

*17-20

He may end up falling on his face at a bigger program, coaches with better resumes than him have done so, but there is no evidence right now showing that he is Derek Dooley and to say so is stupid.

No one was listing Dooley as one of the hot new names for a big job that I am aware of...I do remember people laughed at Tennessee when they hired Dooley. You wanna look at the next Dooley go look at South Carolina's new coach

The background is good. Someone said that he wants the Tennessee job?

let's be honest, half the reason dooley was hired by tennessee was his last name.

Pretty much all of that.

Like you said, no hire is a sure thing. But Napier checks basically every box of a rising star in the coaching ranks.

You’re so full of shat. No way LSU or any other respectable SEC school hires HC direct from SBC.

I follow him because my 2nd daughter is the band at ULL.

He recruits well and has a pretty good offensive plan. I find he makes very dumb decisions on a consistent basis though. Over all, I am not sure who wins between he and O on an IQ test.

That horrific last 4 minutes of the App St game is not unusual for him.

Apples oranges. Malzahn was OC first at big programs like Arky & Auburn. He was at Arky St for ONE season.

If LSU offers Nape, it would be out of complete desperation. He’s not ready for Big job.....HC of AAC or SEC OC perhaps.

Is it really though? Napier was OC at Clemson & Arizona State. Spent time at Bama. Doesn't really seem that different besides Auburn being more familiar with Gus.

Also, Drinkwitz is having a pretty good first year at Mizzou.
