re: So why is Napier the favorite at Tennessee?

I think as far as potential goes, Tennessee is the better job. Obviously right now Auburn is in a better position for immediate success.
But I look at Tennessee kinda like I look at Texas.. a school with a lot of tradition and resources and both schools just one good coaching staff away from the possible “dynasty run”.
I don’t ever see Auburn having a run like that. I think Auburn’s always been Auburn. A tough opponent for anyone that always drops a couple games and every once in a while makes a run for the championship.

I believe, for the right coach, Tennessee is a better job.
Napier would be killer at Tennessee. As LSU fans, Tennessee should be our second favorite SEC team. We need them to be good to give Alabama a tough game every year and occasionally win one.
We have a tough game every year with Florida, and they have a cupcake every year in Tennessee.

Knoxville > Opefreakinlika, for starters.

Napier seems to be a good coach but the team is built on transfers not from high school.
Well that's not true. Transfers have been used to plug some holes, especially due to Hud's shitty recruiting, but the QB, starting RBs, most of the receivers, OL, DL etc. have been anchored by guys who were recruited out of high school, and these days it's Napier's recruits.

It has been widely rumored. It has not been documented at all. It has also been disproven based upon the hires made by the coach that ultimately got the job.

No better than Ole Miss

This is false. I know for a fact.

Auburn's the toughest job in the country.
You better be able to either beat Alabama every other year and average 9 wins per year or beat Alabama 1 out every 4 years and average 10 wins per year... or you're toast.
Very hard to compete in recruiting with the enemies all around you.
Tennessee can be an elite program again. From where they are now, the only place to go is up.
Competing and thriving in the SEC East is a much much better situation.
The state of Tennessee is awesome. Knoxville is cool.

Tenn is not that good of a destination. This isn't 30 years ago. it's different now. They're smack dab in the middle of probably the worst possible recruiting battles you can go.
You have to win the homefront for any major power program and Tenn sucks for recruiting. They have to be a national recruiting power to compete which is not happening when your borders have Bama, Clemson, and Georgia all around it with way better success. The few good recruits they get will just be cherry picked by those 3.
Kiffin didn't stick around at Tenn because he knew he'd never get anywhere and he had the right idea you had to be a national recruiting power to compete. They haven't done that since the 90s. Kiffin was going to make them a national recruiting power again but bolted before he could really be a major mark for them. There's too many obstacles to consider Tenn a good destination.
National recruiting is difficult to do and rely on success doing. Only a few programs can consistently national recruit very well. They have no consistency for success inside the state of Tenn then running out of their borders to recruit across the country is a good luck selling that idea when you're competing against Clemson, Bama, etc. who can cherry pick who they want. You better start dishing out Mercedes compared to the Chargers Bama hands to recruits. Relying on the vast majority of your roster to be out of state is a recipe for disaster when competing because it's not sustainable unless you're always at the top.

You hit the nail on the head. Tennessee is surrounded by UGA, Bama, and Clemson. They are getting the top recuits in that area.

Knoxville is fricking Shangrila compared to central Alabama

Tennessee is one of the better jobs in the SEC. it’s just been an absolute dumpster fire since Fulmer has been the AD
They should hire Malzahn.

That is not true
He's taken on a bunch of transfers this recruiting cycle but that has not been the case on any of his previous teams

Also, UT is currently hiring position coaches. You have to believe they’ve been promised a position on the new staff

Of course we had a guy who averaged 8 wins a year, won an SECC and played for another, and beat Bama more than any other HC during their current run.
And we fired him, because he couldn't beat fricking UGa. Or beat anyone halfway decent in a bowl.
I'm guessing Napier would prefer going to a place where they tell him, "Yeah, we know you'll never beat Bama, nor win the SEC East as long as UGa is around, but Knoxville is cool. You don't even have to win 7 games a year here and we'll be thrilled. "

They'll never be elite again, unless they somehow luck into a Saban/Dabo type coach in the future. The state of Tennessee sucks at producing football talent.

Good Question? Last time TN hired a coach from Louisiana (Tech) named Dooley it didn't go very well for them.
