I don't get that people can't comprehend this. He got nervous and let his agent leak to get Texas to make a move.
Why would anyone pay 5 million for a coach with limited experience? I would have thought 4 was a little high. He may be an awesome coach, but you need to make him earn with incentives.

We will never know, will we? Sure would have been nice to find out or at least make Texas pay for it. Have you ever played poker?

Then certainly you will argue that 3.5 mil is too high for Orgeron, right?

If Herman was who we wanted you make him say no. You don't just back down because he "wants to go to Texas" whether that's even true.
Instead we pay our d line coach millions.

Why should we wanna screw texas? Herman screwed us. So if JA really handled it this way then Herman got what he deserved. F..k him.

I guess that "bidding war" never really materialized, huh Joe?
It can't if there aren't two sides to bid against each other. We backed out when Herman's camp basically backed away from the deal to try and get leverage for either the Texas job or to get more money from us.
Don't fool yourself. LSU would not have gotten him for 5mil a year.

If LSU had countered with 6, he'd be making 6 at Texas.

I agree LSU wasn't getting him for 5. But could we have gotten him for 6 or 7? Probably not, but I guess we'll never know, right?

It's not about screwing Texas. It's about value.
If Alleva wanted to go cheap, then Orgeron should have been offered 2-2.5 million tops. Then incentivize winning in addition. 3.5 mil base is overpaying for Orgeron.

He didn't "cost himself" millions by trying to use LSU as leverage. Either Alleva cost him millions by taking his leverage with Texas away or more likely, he had a back channel agreement with Texas at $5M/year and really had no leverage when LSU went in another direction. The fact that he agreed to terms with Texas so quickly leads me to believe that they already had the parameters of a deal in place for a while.

Herman was not who Alleva wanted. It was obvious that he wanted "O" all along.

Why not, though? Worst case scenario he ends up at Texas.
no worse case scenario, you get stuck paying $6.5MM for a coach you think is maybe worth $5MM. Aleva made an offer. It was not accepted. He had a fall back plan.

Alleva saw he was getting played by a coordinator who coached two years at Houston and just lost to Memphis, Navy, and SMU. Joe pulled the rug out from under him and cost him millions.
I'm no Joe Alleva apologist, but how can you see it any other way?
Agree. Remember that LSU almost assuredly discussed the Texas situation beforehand with Herman. I'm sure that was what the 48 hours for Texas to express interest deadline was that Herman set.
LSU probably decided to move on from Jimbo in part because Herman said Texas is out, I'm ready to accept an offer. Then he agreed in principle.
When he calls back to ask for a chance to hear Texas out, everyone know what that means.
Alleva's error was in not having another candidate lined up and in falling back on Orgeron. You can't blame him for Herman choosing Texas.

He's about to poach our DC though .
Posted on 11/28/16 at 1:48 pm to DallasTiger45
Well it takes two sides to bid. When Texas entered the picture Joe backed off or Herman backed off who knows that ended any substantial more for Texas to pay. Worked out well for them, but not for Herman's agent, who if what we are told is true was banking on getting 6 mil or more for Herman.

He was only worth what the market was willing to pay him.
The only contract details being discussed appear to be base pay. Without knowing the payout for various performance incentives, it's too soon to debate salary and worth. There is a good chance Herman's contract will pay him much more than $5 mil per year by winning a certain percentage of games, by winning a conference title, and by winning a natty, right?

pretty sure he did.
If you take the version of events that were reported as correct, then I don't know how else one could view backing out of a verbal agreement to look at other options as anything other than a no.

He didn't say no, we pulled the offer.
