Sumlin took over for Art Briles, and in four years had two 10-win seasons and one losing season. Herman took over from the immortal Tony Levine (21-17 in 3 years) and immediately went 13-1. He's 8-2 this year, and his 21-3 record gives him literally the best winning percentage of any active coach.
Herman's resume is better than Sumlin's when he was hired at Houston (his 10 years as an OC were superlative) and it's better right now. He also pulled in probably the best recruiting class in UH history. If you walk away from Herman because he dropped a game to SMU, you're a short-sighted moron.
Now, if you walk away for other factors, fine. Maybe you think he can't adjust to a step up in levels. Whatever. But to argue Herman has a bad record as a head coach is contrary to the factual record.

Not really. I am speaking more of their depth. Levine didn't exactly leave Herman with a plum situation that sumlin had.

I think Alleva has decided on O but will talk to Jimbo. He is counting on Jimbo to make some outrageous salary request, then he can tell him no and go with O. He will publicly deny that's why he didn't hire Jimbo but get that word out through "unnamed sources in the athletic department".

Herman has likely fallen behind because if you think you have Jimbo on the line, you aren't going to roll the dice on winning a bidding war with Texas. I doubt Jimbo believes he should play 2nd fiddle to anyone on our list.

Houston fired Levine after consecutive 8-5 seasons. Herman is 8-2 this year with Louisville and a road game at Memphis coming up. With the bowl game he could very easily be 8-5 at the end of the season. Just like the immortal Tony Levine.

I think it is more about how shitty his offense has looked in its last five games. 303 total yards against SMU. 292 total yards against Tulane. Not good for a guy whose specialty is offense, especially when his team is more talented than the opposition.
