I'd rather roll with Callaway who has proven college success and is a known commodity at LSU.
Yep Callaway was in such high demand everybody wanting him he ended up coming LSU as an analyst, give me a break

I’m sure you were on the Munoz train last year at this time

People like this guy can we say that we interviewed whoever the hell he wants, because we aren’t privy to that info. This guy don’t know shite. He is throwing shite at the wall big time. Btw, I heard we also interviewed Urban for OC.

I’m beginning to believe that Ed Orgeron is really nothing more than a f’n moron that caught lightning in a bottle one season. I never wanted to feel this way. If he hires Joe Lombardi, I fully feel like he’ll hire a used up former nfl dc to match. Wasn’t bringing in Brady Slinger’s idea? I don’t know, but go ahead and do your thing O. You won’t be able to fire coordinators to save your arse anymore.

Lombardi is O’s personal favorite at the moment, but not rushing the hire and checking all the boxes
The only box i see that can be checked off with this guy is that he worked with Sean Payton and Drew Brees. If you’re going to go after a Saints offensive assistant, go after Pete Carmichael. If you’re going to go for it, go for the whole f’n thing. Not a proven failure.

He may be a great qb coach, but we need someone who can call plays and who can recruit. If you can get him as PGC, go for it. OC? Not so much. I’d rather take a chance on Callaway. Give someone else an opportunity to fail.

I'm not saying this would be a bad hire, I honestly think a guy that has spent years with Payton and Brees couldn't hurt. But, if it happens, it's another fricking lazy arse hire. If O wants to break the mold on his coordinator success, he needs to look outside of his network and allow people who WANT the job to take a swing at it. Not go 50 miles down the road to an old colleague.

Callaway had passed up multiple job opportunities during the last couple years, including at least one head coaching job and at least one other SEC support staff position.

quote:

After two seasons with the Crimson Tide and two as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Murray State, Callaway went to Samford in 2015 and helped the team rank among the top five in the FCS in passing offense two of the last three seasons, including No. 1 in 2018 with an average of 392.7 passing yards per game.

With Callaway as his offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Devlin Hodges won the 2018 Walter Payton Award as the top offensive player in the FCS and broke the FCS career passing yards record previously held by a former NFL MVP.

Steve McNair.

In addition, Callaway was one of three finalists for the American Football Coaches Association’s 2019 FCS assistant coach of the year award.

“He’s very smart, very intelligent, knows football and I think the most unique thing about him is that he’s worked on both sides of the ball,” said Iowa running backs coach Derrick Foster, who worked with Callaway at Samford. “He has it. He has the tools. He has the ability. He has the mindset and can coordinate an offense. He understands how to cater to his players. And he’s full of energy. I loved being around him, enjoyed coaching with him and can’t say enough about him.”

quote:

As a unit in 2018, Samford's offense led the nation in passing yards per game (392.7) behind the arm of Devlin Hodges, who earned his first NFL start as a rookie with the Pittsburgh Steelers this past season. The offense ranked fourth nationally in total offense (515.9 ypg.), and eighth in both red zone offense (.898) and first downs (298).

Callaway was part of two BCS National Championship teams at Alabama, where he worked on Nick Saban's staff as an analyst. He's the son of Neil Callaway, who was UAB's head coach from 2007-11 and most recently spent three seasons as Southern Cal's offensive line coach

Who coached up Brennan and Max? Who has proven OC success? Callaway is a rising star. Lombardi has plateaued.

It's hilarious to me that people can't see this immediately. Of course he's a moron. He's a rahrah guy with infectious energy that helps him recrui, but without football would likely sell used cars.

There are some huge morons that have made it football really high up coaching by being "football guys" with likeable personalities.

Y'all think Les Miles is breaking records on an IQ test?

So I see a lot of hate towards Lombardi.

I'm neither for or against it right now.

But in the interest of discussion:

Just because someone failed at OC in the NFL, doesn't mean they can't do it at the college level. College defenses aren't as good as NFL one's.

In 2015 the Lions had a top 10 pass offense. He improved it from his first year where they were 12th. They had 8 more Pass TDs than the previous year too.

His running offense was terrible. They didn't have an NFL RB on the roster. They did have Reggie Bush in '14. But the line was 22nd in run blocking and 26th in RB in '15. They also had a OL turnover at 3 positions.

Look I could care less really who the OC is but you guys get too wrapped up looking for the next Joe Brady, you have blinders on. yes Callaway is a good coach and I wouldn’t mind having him as the OC but there are other options.

Looking at some of the other names, Lombardi isn’t looking so bad.

I'll be the glass half full guy .
1. I find it hard to believe that os true feelings are known well enough to filter down to vol. Maybe his source is o but if not ,then its probably someone speculating.

2.at least joe knows the offense we run. I'd hate to have to change the best offensive scheme weve seen at lsu..I mean Graham Harrel running straight air raid or some other guy that runs his system only.
Theres always something to be said for continuity. Imo it's the most underrated factor in building a championship program by derek ponamsky.

of the ones 247 said, he isnt looking bad. Risky but not bad.

If you bring in Lombardi than you need to bring in a RPO guy or maybe callaway can do this, not sure. I know Callaway is a air raid guy but has been around other systems.

I would love to see the Saints exact system with under center plays too lol and those screens...oh those screens.

at first i didnt like the Lombardi hire but after diving deep into the numbers of the other candidates, outside of Moorehead they are all a big risk.

You dont need a specific guy for rpos. It's simple and everyone does it now, including NFL. At its core its whatever your best and most commonly used inside run, with the option to pull it out the belly of the rb and throw a hot route of some kind based on the player on defense you're reading. Its ran like the run play ,blocking and everything.

Simplest way to say it in the huddle ,would be saying this to the wr in the slot ,usually. If you're the qb in the huddle..."inside zone run out Of the shotgun and if they dont cover you then look up cuz I'll just throw it ."

name one time the saints have run a true RPO on the inside? they havent and that was a thing from Moorehead that brady brought.

And no the NFL doesnt run a true RPO, because of the lineman 1 yard down field thing. nobody in the nfl runs a true rpo because they cant.
