He was a total disaster when he left the Payton/Brees nest before as an OC. But maybe he really turned up the learning in his second stint with Payton

I wouldn't say that. It was the Lions for Chrisake. From his bio: "In serving as coordinator of the Lions in 2014, the Detroit offense gained 5,452 total net yards, which was then the eighth-highest total in franchise history. WRs Calvin Johnson (1,077) and Golden Tate (1,331) became only the sixth Lions receiving duo to reach 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. QB Matthew Stafford led the Lions to five victories when trailing or tied in the fourth quarter or overtime as Detroit finished 11-5 and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2011."

Not exactly mind blowing but O is probably hoping for another grand slam from the Payton coaching tree. Brady hasn't exactly set the world on fire at Carolina.

I can’t really buy this, why would you fire Linehan to bring in Lombardi ?

Uh, because Lombardi can coach, and comes from great stock in the most progressive passing system in the NFL today.

This year has been an unmitigated disaster for Lombardi, as the team ranks 30th in points per game. With a talented quarterback like Matthew Stafford and the weapons around him in Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate and Eric Ebron, there's little excuse for such poor production.

Detroit's defense isn't what it was a year ago either. All that has added up to a 1-6 record, and Lombardi is the first high-profile member of the coaching staff to take a fall.

Lombardi is for sure 4th on the saints offense hierarchy behind Payton, Brees and Carmichael.

Please elaborate as to how this would be a poor hire. How do you think lombardi will attack 4-3 defenses with running plays? Will he use zone or the power running game? Will he attack a 3-4 defense with a zone option run? Please elaborate. It’s ok to admit that fans don’t know s$it about running a program. Good day.

Because O thinks he's the next Brady.

He's 50 years old and hasn't coached a college team for 15 years. Btw Joe Brady was 17 the last time Lombardi was around the college game.

On paper this would be a complete disaster of a hire. Its not innovative, its not results based. Its just trying to pluck from the Saints staff and hope to replicate the Brady success because O can't come up with any better ideas.

I'm not saying he's my first choice. Andrew Sowder is, but it doesn't appear he is even on our radar. I'm just saying I'd take him over Harrell's BS offense. By the way, Brady has Carolina's offense ranked #20 in the NFL. College success seldom translates to the NFL and vice versa.

Brady is in year one with Teddy as his QB and was basically down one of the best players in football all year, I’ll give him time

Joe had one bad stint as an OC, returned to Payton immediately and hasn’t gotten sniffed for any coordinator jobs since.

Harrell has at least been in college and had some success there. He wouldn’t be my first choice but he makes more sense than Joe.

Someone tell me good things about Lombardi that don’t start with him being attached to Payton.

Well. Payton had his play calling duties stripped early in his career. Parcells helped his career. Maybe SP did that for Lombardi.

Saban was a failed NFL coach..Belichek will have a losing record and didn't make the playoffs this year without Brady...Situations dictate success... Talent and good coaching are required for success. Lombardi wouldn't bother me under a LSU friendly contract...I just don't see a sure fire home run hire out there that's realistic and feasible. Payton doesn't keep guys around that don't know how to coach and contribute to schemes and game plans...

Saban wasn’t really failed, that’s not accurate

Lombardi had talent in Detroit, he failed. Does that mean he can’t succeed again? No.

Does that mean O should gamble Lombardi gets it right this time? Nope.

Let him prove that elsewhere, this ain’t the place

In Lombardis defense scheming against college coaches is easier than nfl players and coaches.

If the hire doesn’t have recent college experience, the hire is a failure

Lombardi was the OC at Mercyhurst 15 years ago. They have an enrollment of 2700, basically a HS.

Lombardi looks like he's peaked and is not a climbing star.

I'd rather roll with Callaway who has proven college success and is a known commodity at LSU.
