LSU would immediately upgrade if we hired Carter as AD.

1. The ultimatum was dumb. He can call it whatever he wants, but it was an ultimatum. Kiffin held the cards and knew it.

2. Once he gave the ultimatum he should have stuck to it. Now UF has sumrall and Auburn has golesh because OM is late to the party.

3. If you weren’t going to force Kiffin’s hand, let him coach through the playoff and then promote Golding or judge because that’s where you’re at now anyway.

Keith Carter and the OM boosters have royally screwed the timing of this up.

Lane waiting too long screwed a lot of programs.

That was never an option. Ole Miss needs its head coach in place for the same reasons everyone else does. The portal window.

Carter and OM played this about as bad as possible. You convinced yourselves that LK would never leave your precious Oxford for LSU. The only card you had to play was actually letting him coach. This would have likely put LSU in the position of forcing LK’s hand, which could have resulted in him staying at OM. It was your only play.

They could have fired him earlier for not committing but it's pretty tough to criticize them on it when he was presumably telling them he was leaning towards staying.

I don't know if he was just carrying water or if he believed this was the right thing to do. If the latter, he should be fired.

Saban told everyone what the right thing to do was. Do what's best for the players, and that is let Kiffin coach.

If they would have done this. they could have had an honest discussion and moved forward strategically.

OM fans are angry at Kiffin, but they need to be angry at their AD who has fricked this up beyond all recognition — and continues to do so.

Pretty good point being made here.

He could have told him he could coach the playoffs - or - he could have told him he wasn’t going to be allowed to coach the playoffs (under threat of suspension if necessary).

Yes, as if they were going to let their outgoing coach, who is leaving for a conference rival, recruit players and coaches from inside the building for a month.

Its amazing that so many people think that was remotely even considered.

If your best coach in 50 years says that you don't think it's the AD's job to try everything possible to keep him? I hear what you're saying, but part of the job is keeping your successes.

The mistake was hoping Kiffin would stay, thus making it possible for Kiffin to string him along for a month.

The real mistake in all of this was made years ago. No mitigation clause in his contract. Without that, Ole Miss had no real threat to fire him during this saga so Lane always held all the cards.

Well that was the only leverage ole miss had and they still don’t have a head coach.

Releasing the statement was dumb, outside of that I’m fine with how it played out. Not much he could do

He should have seen this coming when Kiffin didn't sign and tell him either sign here or leave. He played around thinking Lane might stay when it was obvious he wanted to leave. Now yall are screwed.

Anything but let it continue until today. Hell, Ole Miss might have been better off allowing him to coach the playoffs and even waiting until after to hire their coach.

Their top 2 replacement options signed elsewhere today.

Current calendar, as everyone now agrees, is massively unfair to both schools and coaches. Change it immediately for next cycle.
