For Jacksonville State, Arkansas State, Idaho State and the likes. He would not make Woody's top 5 list.

correct

it's because we want to know we're going to have success...

and fans judge this by whether you've proven yourself already in the big leagues...

it's hard to steal someone else's home run hire

you have to find the right guy often times at a less school or coordinator position

When UGA hired Kirby Smart, what did they think about that hire?

Probably mixed...but he's turned out to be star

and if it weren't for Nick Saban, Kirby might have 2 SEC's and a national title already

I think he gets both this year!

I'm sure there's no bias here. What percentage of the casual football fan knows or cares about ULL?

I guess the casual football fans who were looking at the top 25 at season end because UL was there and we weren't...probably same for this year. I have heard Billy Napiers name on College Football Gameday weeks on end last year and already this year..

Napier would be on my list. This is what I posted about him in another thread:

Napier would be a homerun hire. Main drawback is that he will be portrayed by the media as Ed 2.0. Whether fair or not, they will take his current position's proximity to LSU and make a "bayou" connection to the current regime. Otherwise, Napier has superb credentials, taking ULL to records of 11-3 in 2019 and 10-1 in 2020. He has prior experience under Saban and Swinney. Most surprisingly to me, ULL ended 2020 ranked at #16. Downside is obviously his lack of Power 5 experience, but he has reportedly received HC interest from five SEC teams in two years. Also, he has related that he wants time to implement his vision at whatever school he chooses--something LSU might not be willing to give any new hire.

His name would barely be mentioned on here if he were coaching ANYWHERE but Lafayette. Put him at Coastal Carolina and Chadwell at ULL and we'd be seeing every 6th posts talking about how great Chadwell is. I promise you, his "candidacy" is FAR more realistic amongst the fans than it is with the people actually involved in making the hire.

LSU didn't agree to pay O and his staff $20 million to go away just to turn around and hire ULL's coach. If LSU hires Napier then it is because EVERY other big name has told them no.

There's no world where this is true, that Napier fits the definition of "splash". Splash means the Lincoln Rileys or Dabo's of the world.

That doesn't mean Napier would be a bad hire.

Yeah, if LSU hires Billy Napier then there will be a TON of WHO??? and national shows going "Louisiana LOL" around the country.

Again, that doesn't mean it will be a bad hire.

He is a guy I think would be a solid hire for sure, but I think he is probably 4th or 5th on Woodward’s list

I think you are correct.

Now tell me how many guys Woodward tried to court before making the Jay Johnson hire for baseball.

Caucasian version of Tucker. Both very high ceilings but not without some risk.

That's your criteria for a big splash hire? Do you know who the head coach for Ball State is? San Jose St? Buffalo? They all finished in the top 25 last year too

exactly. i'd be happy with napier. all these athletic directors see something.

napier seems pretty confident that he'll get a top 5 type position.

When I hear the name Billy Napier I have flashes of Bo Rein and what might have been. Spurrier wasn't a flashy name in '86 and we passed on him.

Splash and Flop share a denotative meaning but their connotative meanings differ. I think you meant to say Flop
