Ahh, GA, that’s it. Wait, that goes back to my post about Sabin and his defenses, only this time the defensive mind is Kirby Smart.

Is it the ‘defensive mind’ of Kirby smart? Or did he just take what Saban did and apply it to UGA? Kirby had no HC exp. Prior to UGA.

Call it how ever you see it. Regardless, Smarts defenses are good year in and year out. Either he is good on his own or he is good copying Saban. At this point I would say he has proved he knows what he is doing.

Why hasn’t Tucker had similar success the last 3 years after Smart?

I didn’t realize Tucker has multiple national championships that would make this comparison, uhhh, comparable.

If Ohio State drops 70 on him, I’ll drop him. He’s not my first pick, but I think he’s the most likely pick.

Good grief this is going to be a long 2 months or however long it is.

LSU should be able to do better, period.

I am aware of this, but again, the chancellor and the board don’t have the money to foot the bill without the boosters. They can essentially wish in one hand and you know the rest.

You don't pay Org 17 mill to go away so that you can hire Mel Tucker

During 2016 I was trying to reassure myself by saying "you don't fire someone like Miles to hire someone like O." Now, granted, we have a better AD, but I'm still not completely confident.

I was thinking about LSU coaching hires over the last 70 years and most of them were borderline, lazy or incompetent.

Solid/Great: Dietzel, Arnsparger, Saban, Rein
Lazy: McClendon, Stovall, Archer, Miles, Orgeron
Borderline: Dinardo
Absolutely incompetent: Hallman

That's the record over the past 70 years. Scott needs to hire someone great. LSU convinced itself that all of the lazy, borderline, and incompetent hires it made over the years was good enough. In reality, the AD failed to do the appropriate diligence and/or gave up quickly in the process and hired an easy guy. That can't happen this time.

Saban wasn’t a great hire at the time. He had an average record at a mid-level Big 10 school. They hired him based on potential. Even though his record didn’t show it at the time, he was well thought of in coaching circles.

My guess is that’s what we’ll see with this hire as well. There’s really nobody available who is a no brainer. Kiffin has baggage and hasn’t proven to be a guaranteed winner as a HC. Fickel seems good, but he coaches at Cincinnati. Riley looks like a stud, but he inherited a good program and has maintained it at an all time football power. Honestly, there is no Nick Saban out there except for Nick Saban.

So, my money is on the idea that we’ll choose a coach who is well thought of in coaching circles, and has the potential to be great. Tucker seems to check those boxes, but honestly, what the hell do I know? I trust Woodward to make a great hire.

The President (especially a brand new one) and the BOS don’t make a football hire in 2021. This isn’t 1995

It’s naive to think that they do.

They get a say, sure, but at the end of the day it isn’t their call to make. They can, however, throw up roadblocks and interference.

Woodward and the $$$ people are the only voices that matter.

I disagree about Saban. He may not have been a flashy hire at the time but he was a great hire. He was universally respected in the Big 10 (I was living in the Midwest at the time).

One of my concerns with Tucker is that he doesn't have a long track record as being the head guy and as a minority, we risk people saying "good enough". I don't know a lot about him but he's not someone with a background that justifies $10M/yr. The fact that LSU paid O $8M/yr for the last two years is criminal.

Tomlin is someone with a track record that could justify that sort of price tag but he's not Saban and how much of his success with the Steelers is tied to Big Ben in his prime?

As much as he is maligned, Fisher is a guy that could win championships at LSU. He had a great year last year and beat Bama this year.

I wouldn't trust Dabo to recreate at LSU what he's done at Clemson. No way should they hire him without Venables locked down.

Kiffin is extremely talented but is unstable. He could simply leave in the middle of a season.

I'd be very happy with Riley or Fickell and think they could win consistently here but I don't think we get them.

If necessary, Aranda would be solid HC if we miss on all of those guys. We could probably get him for $6M/yr. I'd like some creative OC to pair with him, though.

Sorry, Tucker is not elite on the defensive side of the ball. Otherwise we would see this years MSU team in the top 25% of defenses, especially against the week teams they have played.

I mean, they are #21 in PPG allowed, less than 20 a game. We are 96th at 31.9 PPG.

seriously? lol

He has left one HC job after one season and that was to go be the coach at USC

2 years at Oakland when he was way too young to have the job...fired

1 year at Tennessee where he left to go home to USC (the only time he has left in a "bad way")

3.5 years at USC where he was hit with Pete Carroll's sanctions and still managed to have a 65% winning percentage...fired too soon

3 years as OC at Bama and leaves there to go be a HC again

3 years at FAU where he has a 10 and 11 win season, leaves for a better job in the SEC

in second year at Ole Miss now

Kiffin has his issues but the "he is unstable and jumps around a lot" argument is fricking stupid and needs to die. He has been fired twice and every other time he has left has been to take a step up.

Mentioning Kiffin's instability is not stupid. You just pointed out that he was fired twice (he also didn't seem to leave Saban on good terms) and he left TN mid-season. He's a poor man's Steve Spurrier, but with more instability and less excellence.
