Specifically, sources said Harbaugh is seeking language that would grant him immunity from termination from any finding or sanction that could arise from multiple current NCAA investigations into the football program.

Harbaugh is also seeking a delay in the start date of the new contract to maintain a lower buyout that NFL teams would have to pay Michigan to hire him away. The buyout in his current contract dropped from $2.25 million to $1.5 million on January 11. Michigan is seeking that to rise to about $4 million in a new deal. Harbaugh has sought to have the new deal not start until Feb. 15, thus maintaining the lower, and more favorable, buyout number until after the NFL hiring cycle has concluded.

Extra points for a USC fan dropping that reference.

Jesus have some pride Michigan. This man is literally constructing his contract to make you his back up plan.

He's securing a massive raise as a fall back that goes into place only if he doesn't get an NFL job.

Damn how can Harbaugh continue to recruit these guys when he is openly flirting with the NFL... The cupboard must truly be bare at Michigan... And Harbaugh is just looking for an exit

What's going to happen when Michigan has to vacate their NC?

Why not? He holds all of the leverage.

Agreed. Which means Michigan is going to have to deal with this essentially every offseason.

If I'm their AD I say: "Coach. Thank you for the National Championship. We want you to be here. We are willing to pay you at top 3-5 salary to remain here for many years to come. But if you want to leave for the NFL, that's fine. Go. We aren't going to beg you to stay every year." You have our offer on the table and you are interviewing with NFL teams. So until you assure us otherwise, we are going to assume you will be taking an NFL. Thus, I will begin/continue the process of searching for a new HC unless and until that becomes unnecessary."

He does, but only until the hiring cycle ends. If he’s making it clear that signing a new contract won’t stop him from going to the NFL anyway, then they should just wait until after the cycle and take that leverage away.

At that point, the championship banner can join the 2 final four banners in the closet.

You're probably right. I would gladly award the title to Georgia, though.
