agreed but I dont think he would be a bad hire. I am not going to say he is the next Saban but saban wasnt a huge fish coming from MSU so Napier could pan out to be a damn good coach or he could end up being like whats his name who was recently fired from Texas. Its just the gamble you make.

I agree 100%

Napier is a total fallback option and I will be very concerned if he ends up as HC

What coach in the entire history of football could get ULL ready for the SEC?

Napier would be a Tier 2 backup if Woodward couldn't land a Tier 1 backup. We would be way beyond the big fish options.

Napier, Tucker & Aranda would all be good backup options if you can’t land the big name. And I think they would all do well here.

That’s true

That doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be a good, or even great, hire.

Woody has Jimbo as the fallback option and Jimbo is a sure thing.

Its going to be Jimbo.

You mean Scott wouldn't choose Napier over Riley if he had the choice?

I am shocked!

Agreed 100%

Napier may be a good HC at LSU. Hell, the last three guys had done nothing of remarkable note before coming to LSU and each winning a NC. But you don't agree to eat ~$20 million to just immediately run down I-10 to hire USL's coach. You try to use the prestige of the program and the pull of the massive bank account to land a much more accomplished HC.

If you can't land one of those guys and Napier is the hire, then so be it. There wasn't consensus excitement among the fanbase when the hires of Saban, Miles and Orgeron were announced. Yet, all three led teams to championships. So I wouldn't bet against Napier being able to do the same. But you leave him on the backburner to see how the first tier of targets pan out.

And before anyone says "you may lose him if you slow play him", here's the response. Name another job available or that could become available that is a better opportunity than LSU? No other school can say their last 3 coaches have all won championships. And no other school (if Woodward's past is any indication, along with his hiring of Mulkey here) will be willing to pay the amount LSU will be willing to pay.

LSU doesn't have to rush to keep Sun Belt coaches from "getting away". Sun Belt coaches wait on LSU.

What if Napier goes on to be the next Saban? Does that still mean that Woody was incompetent?

Not arguing for the hire... just saying that your argument is a silly one.

OR . . .

. . . maybe it means he did his homework, weighed all the factors, and concluded he's the best man for the future of LSU football.

Coming from MSU

Nick had already been successful at two different schools before he came to LSU and like the big 10 or not, many of the schools playing in it are light years ahead of the sun belt and ULL in performance on the field and success in college football.

A knock we heard continually about Miles was that his teams had a history of struggling against lesser opponents. Well, what do you think went on last night and other games this year for the Cajun? Hell, I think just last year they barely were able to be south eastern. If Billy is the fantastic recruiter that’s portrayed on this forum and 3+ into building his program , why is he struggling with teams having inferior talent?

If woody has to tap Billy I’m gonna wonder about Woody’s abilities to do his job and hope Billy is everything some people claim him to be.
